☀️ Summer is here… but not every foot or ankle pain is from being more active.
Lately, we’ve seen several patients come in thinking they simply “overdid it” with walking, hiking, golf, or other summer activities. But after asking a few more questions, the real culprit wasn’t a muscle or joint injury—it was gout.
🚩 Signs that make us suspicious of gout:
• Sudden, severe pain (often in the big toe)
• Redness and swelling
• Warmth around the joint
• Pain that’s extremely sensitive to touch—even a bedsheet can hurt
• Pain that often becomes worse at night
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid crystals building up in the joint. While we can help identify when something doesn’t fit a typical musculoskeletal injury, we refer patients to their family physician for confirmation and appropriate treatment. The good news? With the right anti-inflammatory medication, symptoms often improve very quickly.
So why are we seeing more cases this time of year? 🌡️
💧 Dehydration from the summer heat can increase uric acid levels.
🍖 More barbecues, red meat, seafood, and alcohol can also trigger gout attacks.
If your foot, ankle, knee, or toe pain seems unusually intense, especially with swelling and redness, don’t just assume it’s from overuse. Getting the right diagnosis can make all the difference.
