Have you ever tried aquatic therapy?

A new study found that aquatic therapy exercises improved pain intensity, function, and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis. When put up against land-based exercise, aquatic was found to be more effective.

As aquatic therapy is performed in a water environment, it helps to reduce the motion and stress barriers some clients may have.

A recent article from Everyday Health explores what it means to be "touch starved" and how a lack of physical touch can impact your health.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of more than 130 studies found that positive touch interventions like massage therapy can make a difference.

Not getting enough physical touch can contribute to a host of health issues. Coping strategies — including professional massages, asking friends for hugs, and spending time with pets — may help.

There’s been a lot of noise online lately about fascia -especially around the idea that fascia ā€œstores emotions.ā€

So let’s talk about that for a second.

No, fascia does not store emotions like some kind of emotional junk drawer.

Your grief is not hiding in your hamstring.

Your childhood trauma is not living in your IT band.

Your shoulder blade is not quietly hoarding resentment from 2007.

That language gets tossed around a lot, and I think it’s time we cleaned it up.

But here’s the other side of it -fascia is not useless either.

It is not just plastic wrap inside your body.

Fascia is connective tissue. It surrounds, supports, separates, and connects structures throughout the body. And importantly, it has nerves. It has blood supply. It has sensory receptors. That means it can send information to your nervous system.

And your nervous system cares about that information.

Pain is not just about ā€œdamage.ā€ Pain is an experience your brain and nervous system create based on a whole pile of inputs: tissue sensitivity, inflammation, stress, sleep, movement, past experiences, threat, and yes, emotion.

So no, fascia is not ā€œholdingā€ emotions.

But sensitive connective tissue can absolutely be part of a system that influences pain, guarding, tension, threat, and protection.

That’s the nuance.

When we treat fascia or connective tissue, we are not wringing emotions out of tissue like a wet dishcloth.

We are stimulating sensitive receptors and giving the nervous system a new input to work with.

That can change pain.

That can change movement.

That can change muscle guarding.

That can change the feeling of tightness or restriction.

And sometimes people do feel emotional during or after treatment. That does not mean the tissue was ā€œstoringā€ the emotion. It means the body and brain are connected, pain and emotion overlap, and the nervous system is not a spreadsheet with tidy little columns.

So yes, let’s retire the mystical fascia language.

Fascia is not magic.

Fascia is not emotional Tupperware.

But it also is not irrelevant.

It is a living, sensory-rich, neurologically connected tissue system that can absolutely matter in pain and movement.

The better conversation is not:

ā€œFascia stores trauma.ā€

And it is not…

ā€œFascia does nothing.ā€

The better conversation is…

ā€œHow does stimulating sensitive connective tissue influence the nervous system, pain, protection, and movement?ā€

What is a cluster headache? Why does one get them?

People who have experienced a cluster headache often say the same thing: nothing prepared them for it. Not migraine, not tension headache, not anything they had felt before. Neurologists describe it as one of the most severe pain conditions known to medicine. People who live with it describe it as s...
