A wildfire disaster simulation hosted by St. Michael’s Hospital and conducted by experts from Veterans Affairs Canada and McMaster University, brought together health care leaders to test emergency response during and after a large-scale disaster.

The exercise focused on how health and emergency management systems address the immediate and long-term mental health and psychosocial impacts of disaster – an often overlooked but critical part of recovery.

As an American College of Surgeons Level 1 verified trauma centre, St. Michael’s is applying these insights to strengthen an all-hazards approach to emergency preparedness – one that supports both survival in the moment and recovery over time.

Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, and health care leaders from across Canada gathered at St. Michael’s Hospital today to launch Vital -- a national health data platform founded by St. Michael’s physicians Drs. Amol Verma and Fahad Razak and collaborators across the country.

Nearly 250 leading minds from academia, industry, military, government and public sector met at the Unity Health Toronto site to mark a new era in health care innovation and discovery.

“Vital helps Canada learn from the care we already deliver — so we can deliver it better,” Minister Solomon said. “That is the core of Vital: a secure, privacy-preserving health infrastructure for Canadians’ most important data: their healthcare. It connects real-time hospital data for research and innovation, while protecting privacy and while respecting provincial oversight.”

The day was anchored with roundtable discussions and panels on emerging issues in health data and AI, including how AI can improve healthcare and the importance of trust in these technologies.

Minister Solomon echoed the $100 million in new federal funding for Vital announced as part of the AI for All strategy. This brings the total to $210 million in government and institutional funding.

“The opportunity to build this Canada-wide platform is thanks to the visionary investment of the Government of Canada, which builds on foundational and continued investment from the Government of Ontario and strong partnership with Alberta and Quebec,” Dr. Verma said.

Roberta Pike, Director of Indigenous Wellness, Reconciliation and Partnerships at Unity Health Toronto, led staff through a Smudge N’ Talk session on the four sacred medicines central to First Nations spiritual practice.

The four medicines sit within the Medicine Wheel, each positioned at a cardinal direction. The Medicine Wheel is a sacred teaching tool used by many First Nations cultures to express the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things.

Sitting in a circle, participants heard teachings on each medicine.

After sharing teachings on the medicines, Roberta burned the medicines together in a smudge bowl, demonstrating how they work in ceremony. She invited staff to smudge themselves, guiding them through the practice.

Following the ceremony, an eagle feather was passed in a circle, and as each person held it, they shared what the experience meant to them and had an opportunity to ask questions. It became a space for honest conversation, where participants could pause, listen, and validate one another's reflections.

Congratulations to Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO of Unity Health Toronto, who was presented with the 2026 CCHL Distinguished Leadership Award this past weekend in Montreal. The Distinguished Leadership Award is the highest honour awarded by the Canadian College of Health Leaders, recognizing a visionary leader who has driven meaningful transformation and demonstrated exemplary engagement, collaboration and a dedication to building leadership capacity.

“This recognition is a reflection of the places I’ve worked and the people who have supported me,” says Stationwala. “I’ve spent my entire career in hospitals and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. The Wound Care Team at St. Michael’s Hospital is taking great strides to provide community-centered care. This interdisciplinary team, specializing in patient care and education for people with complex wounds, created a specialized course about treating chronic wounds for unhoused populations.

This was in collaboration with the Downtown CORE Team – a pilot program from Toronto Public Health (TPH) and Toronto Police Services (TPS) that supports vulnerable people living in the Yonge and Dundas area.

"We have the knowledge and expertise to apply best practices guidelines; however, their implementation must reflect the realities of the populations we serve,” said Janeth Velandia.

“We want to provide information that reflects real-world practice and create an approach that is truly interdisciplinary.”
