A patch smaller than a penny could one day save the lives of people experiencing a fentanyl overdose – even when no one else is there to help.

Researchers in Virginia Tech’s Department of Biological Systems Engineering have developed a wearable microneedle patch that can detect fentanyl in the body and automatically release naloxone, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. The technology could change how opioid overdoses are treated by making lifesaving intervention possible without relying on a bystander.

Recovery looks different for everyone, and every story matters.

The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction is inviting people across Canada who identify as being in recovery from unhealthy or harmful substance use to participate in a national survey.

The findings will help increase understanding of the many pathways to recovery, inform future services, and reduce stigma surrounding substance use and recovery.

September 30th is International Recovery Day, a global event dedicated to celebrating recovery from addiction. Communities worldwide are encouraged to light up the night sky in purple, symbolizing support for those impacted by addiction and the belief that recovery is achievable.

This day, which rounds out Recovery Month, unites people across the globe by spreading hope and raising awareness. Thank you to Mayor Olivia Chow for proclaiming September 30th Recovery Day in the City of Toronto!
