This week, SHN celebrates our incredible perinatal nurses and the specialized care they provide to patients, newborns and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum journey.

Perinatal nursing is a unique blend of clinical expertise, quick decision-making, education, advocacy and compassion. At SHN, our perinatal nurses are committed to continuous learning, evidence-based practice and improving care - while supporting families through some of life’s most meaningful, vulnerable and complex moments.

From bedside care to ongoing education and quality improvement, our perinatal nurses help strengthen patient safety and family-centred care across our Women’s and Children’s Program.

Since the completion of our expanded dialysis centres at General and Centenary hospitals, our patients are receiving dialysis care in spaces built to the highest standards, with more accessible layouts, stronger infection prevention and control measures in place, upgraded technology, and environments designed with comfort, privacy, and dignity in mind.

Patients like Scott Spence-Lee, who has lived with kidney failure since 2018 and comes to the hospital for hemodialysis every week, has felt the tremendous impact of an enhanced facility and technology. He was also among the group of patients who evaluated and tested the equipment SHN selected for the new facilities, the B. Braun Dialog IQ hemodialysis machines.

October is , and SHN is committed to spreading awareness about breast health and preventative screenings. It is recommended to have a mammogram every 2 years if you're between the ages of 40 and 74.

Consistent screenings are vital for earlier detection and prevention of breast cancer. Our Breast Health Clinics at Birchmount, Centenary and General Hospitals are Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) designated sites, and provide faster, simpler breast cancer screening.
