Persistent pain after revision knee surgery left Issa Abdalla searching for answers.

He was referred to Dr. Jesse Wolfstadt, Head of the Granovsky Gluskin Division of Orthopaedics at Sinai Health. Issa’s infection was difficult to diagnose, but through clinical expertise and next-generation sequencing, Dr. Wolfstadt and his team were able to identify the infection behind his ongoing pain and determine the complex treatment he needed.

Issa’s case reflects the highly specialized work happening across Sinai Health, where clinical care and research come together to tackle some of the most complex challenges in orthopaedics and improve outcomes for patients.

For people born without a uterus, the dream of carrying a pregnancy is becoming a reality.

In October 2025, Sinai Health’s Complex Obstetric Surgery team delivered a healthy baby following a uterine transplant. The pregnancy, conceived through IVF with the Mount Sinai Fertility team, was the first of its kind to be carried and delivered in Canada.

The milestone is helping Sinai Health explore what it would take to build a Canadian uterine transplant program and make this care more accessible to patients across the country.

“For many people born without a uterus, the ability to carry a pregnancy has never felt possible,” says Dr. Sebastian Hobson. “This milestone shows that the conversation is changing – from asking whether it's possible to asking how we can make this care available to more Canadians.”

"When I first meet a patient, I'm trying to understand how their illness or injury affects their ability to function in everyday life."

For Stephanie Seilman, an occupational therapist (OT) at Mount Sinai Hospital, that's the question that shapes every visit to the Emergency Department (ED).

Before December 2024, patients who were medically ready to safely transition home or to an alternate care setting were sometimes kept overnight simply because an occupational therapist or physiotherapist (PT) wasn't available outside regular hours.

Once dedicated full-time coverage was built into the department, Stephanie and her colleagues assessed 743 non-admitted patients in under six months, helping nearly three-quarters of them leave the ED without an overnight stay.

Many aspects of women’s health are interconnected. Historically, however, they have often been studied and treated in silos.

From menopause and cardiovascular disease to autoimmune disease and mental health, women’s health is shaped by complex interactions across the lifespan. Recognizing these connections is essential to improving prevention, research and care.

Across Sinai Health, clinicians and researchers are working across specialties to better understand these intersections and apply that knowledge to more coordinated models of care.

Dr. Marie Christakis, Clinical Lead of the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health, is examining menopause as an important window for preventive care, including how hormonal changes may influence cognitive health.

Her work reflects a broader, multidisciplinary approach to women’s health - one that considers the whole person rather than a single condition.

New research from an international consortium, co-led by Sinai Health's Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, marks a major milestone in chronic pain research.

In the largest genetic study of fibromyalgia to date, researchers analyzed genetic data from over 2.5 million adults across 11 cohorts and identified 26 genetic variants associated with the syndrome.
The strongest link was with HTT, the gene implicated in Huntington's disease.

Overall, the findings provide the strongest evidence yet that fibromyalgia is a neurological, not autoimmune, disorder as has long been debated.

"For decades, patients have been dismissed or told their pain is simply psychological," said Dr. Michael Wainberg, co-senior author on the study. "Our findings confirm the condition has a clear biological basis."

Published in Nature Medicine, this research reshapes our understanding of a chronic pain condition affecting roughly 2% of the global population, and opens new avenues for treatment.

“This fellowship has been the most transformative year of my career.”

For Dr. Margarita Blajeva, Mount Sinai Hospital’s Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship offered the opportunity to learn in one of Canada’s busiest high-risk maternity programs while contributing to research and work alongside leaders in the field.

Offered in partnership with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, the fellowship is helping shape what’s next in maternal care.

"I felt like I was constantly walking on edge."

After experiencing severe pre-eclampsia during her first pregnancy, Cynthia knew her second pregnancy would require specialized care. She was referred to Dr. John Kingdom, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist who leads Mount Sinai Hospital’s internationally recognized Placenta Clinic.

Throughout her pregnancy, an integrated team of experts monitored her health, supported her baby and responded quickly as complications developed. When her daughter was born prematurely, experts in the NICU were there to provide the care she needed.

Sinai Health has launched its new Mental Health and Addictions Program, bringing services together under one leadership structure to strengthen coordinated, person-centred care across Mount Sinai and Hennick Bridgepoint Hospitals.

As Sinai Health’s fifth clinical program, and the first to span across the organization, it builds on years of collaboration and represents the next phase in strengthening mental health and addictions care.

“This is an important step for us as we grow and have the ability to touch more lives,” said Dr. David Gratzer, Psychiatrist-in-Chief and Medical Program Director, Mental Health and Addictions. "The new program positions us to build on that momentum in the years ahead.”
