As an SLP, some of my absolute favourite books aren’t just fun to read; they are secret weapons for building communication. Here are 3 quick ways to level up your next story time:

Don’t just read the words: Talk about the pictures, point out funny details, and follow your child’s lead.

Embrace the opportunity to pause: Read a familiar page, stop right before the climax, and wait. It practically forces target words and sounds right out of them!

Model, don’t test: Instead of asking “What’s that?”, try commenting: “Wow, a big, muddy truck!” It takes the pressure off and models rich language.
