Great graphic looking at trauma and it’s effects. Trauma is not what happens to us, it’s what happens in our body as a response to events and this illustrates that very well.

Trauma isn't only something you remember. It's something your body carries on doing.

When a nervous system spends long enough braced, the effects don't stay emotional. They show up as sleep that never quite finishes the job. Digestion that won't settle. Muscles held tight for no reason you can name. Anger that arrives faster and larger than the situation warrants, or never arrives at all.

This is why insight alone so often fails to shift it. Your system decides whether a situation is safe below conscious thought, and far faster than thought. You can understand your own history in complete detail and still arrive braced. The understanding is real. It just isn't reaching the level where the problem lives.

Regulation before reflection. When that order is reversed, therapy can become something you perform rather than something that changes you.

None of this is weakness or a failure of effort. It's what a nervous system does after it has spent a long time keeping someone safe, and hasn't yet had the conditions it needs to stop.

I'm a counsellor and occupational therapist in Enniskillen, working online across the UK. If any of this is familiar, there's more about how I work with trauma here: innerease.co.uk/services/trauma-therapy
