Staying safe in the heat π₯΅βοΈ
Heat affects both physical and mental health and some medications can increase the risk of heat-related illness.
Hot weather can lead to increased stress, anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, and difficulty concentrating. For people living with mental health conditions, heat can sometimes worsen symptoms.
Some medications prescribed for mental health conditions may affect how the body regulates temperature. This can make people more vulnerable during hot weather.
During the current period of high temperatures these are some helpful tips:
π§ Drink plenty of fluids.
π Stay in cool or shaded places when possible.
π Wear light clothing and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
π Take medications as prescribed and speak to a healthcare professional if you have concerns about heat and your medications.
π Check in on friends, family members, and neighbours who may be more vulnerable.
Looking after our mental and physical health during hot weather is important. Stay cool, stay connected, and seek support if needed.
