What can make sciatic pain worse?

If you've ever experienced sciatic pain, you'll know it can range from a mild ache to sharp, shooting pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock and down the leg.

These are some of the things that can make symptoms worse include:

• Sitting for long periods, especially on soft or unsupportive chairs.
• Lifting heavy objects without good technique.
• Repeated bending and twisting.
• Long car journeys without regular breaks.
• Tight muscles around the hips and buttocks, which may increase pressure on the sciatic nerve in some people.

Gentle movement is often better than prolonged rest, although it's important to listen to your body and avoid anything that significantly increases your pain.

Because sciatic pain can have several different causes, it's always worth getting persistent or severe symptoms assessed by a healthcare professional.

If your pain is related to muscle tension, massage may help ease tight muscles, reduce discomfort and improve mobility.

If you’ve ever had a sharp, shooting pain down one side of your lower back, buttock, or leg—you might have experienced sciatic pain.

Some people describe it as a deep ache in the buttock. Others feel it as a burning, tingling or numbness that travels down the leg. It usually affects one side only, and can feel worse when sitting, driving, or standing for too long.

The cause? It’s not always a bulging disc that is putting pressure on the nerve. Sometimes it’s tight muscles—like the piriformis—putting pressure on the nerve as it travels through the glutes.

The good news? Massage can help relieve the pressure, ease muscle tension, and restore more comfortable movement.

If you're dealing with this kind of discomfort, you don't have to just put up with it. I’ve supported many clients with sciatic-type symptoms—feel free to get in touch if you'd like to know more.

When you have sciatic pain caused by a tight piriformis muscle, you may want to sit down or stop moving, but rest isn't the answer. Often, sitting is what caused the problem in the first place. Massaging the muscle along with stretches and exercises are the go-to treatments for piriformis syndrome.

Sciatic pain can show up as a sharp, burning, or tingling sensation that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg. But did you know there are two common causes?

A Herniated Disc
This happens when one of the discs between your vertebrae bulges and presses on the sciatic nerve. It’s more likely to cause pain in the lower back and can sometimes affect strength or movement in the leg. While massage won’t fix the disc itself, it can help relieve surrounding tension and ease protective muscle guarding—making you feel more comfortable.

Piriformis Syndrome
In many cases, sciatic-like pain is caused by a tight piriformis muscle (deep in the buttock) compressing the nerve. It can be just as uncomfortable, but massage can be highly effective. By gently releasing tight glutes and helping the muscle relax, symptoms often improve quickly.

If you're struggling with pain down one leg or in your lower back and buttock, it’s worth getting it checked. Massage may be able to help—especially if muscle tension is involved.

Low back pain is very common.

It can result from many different injuries or conditions. Most often it is caused by an injury or imbalance in the muscles around the lower spine.

Nearly everyone experiences low back pain at some point in their lives. The pain can range from mild to severe, but it can make everyday activities such as walking, sleeping and working difficult or impossible.

Massage releases the tight muscles around the lumbar spine, which reduces the pain, and allows the muscles to function properly.
