One of the nicest things about our job is hearing your stories.

This lovely initiative from Dalbeattie Museum is a wonderful way of keeping those stories alive. Well worth a share.

On Saturday, Rachael attended the NAFD Scottish Education Day at East Lothian Crematorium.

One of the highlights of the day was a fascinating presentation from Kindly Earth, exploring Resomation (Alkaline Hydrolysis) following the Scottish Government’s recent legalisation of the process.

The display from Obitus was also particularly impressive. East Lothian Crematorium is the latest in a growing number of venues offering innovative technology, including bespoke projected themes and lighting displays during services.

We were warmly welcomed by Tim Purves, the Scottish NAFD President, who facilitated engaging discussions and valuable Q&A sessions.

Events such as these are an important part of continuing professional development. They provide opportunities to stay informed about developments within the profession, share ideas and experiences with colleagues, and build connections that ultimately help us provide the highest standard of care and service to the families we support.

Thank you to the National Association of Funeral Directors for organising such an informative and enjoyable day, and to East Lothian Crematorium & Memorial Gardens for hosting.

Thanks also to our friends Adam and Harvey from Tranquility Funerals Dumfries (pictured towering over our wee Rachael) for their company, insight, and conversation throughout the day.

It’s always handy having a tech whizz in the family & for our Funeral Director, Rachael, that comes in the form of her husband, Dave. Dave is a Sound Engineer by trade but works on funerals providing live streams & photo slideshows.

We’re all for sharing the lighter side of what we do and one of Rachael’s more bashful moments came when working with Dave to provide a photo slideshow for a service.

Rachael cc’d Dave into an email thread for the family to provide photographs, not realising the name she had Dave stored as in her phone would be shared with the family… needless to say, it was swiftly changed to his given name! 😳

At D.G. Lockhart Funeral Directors we’re all about connection and what’s nicer than a mother & son duo? Here’s Adam, our casual funeral operative, pictured with his mum, one of our lovely celebrants, Fiona Bryant. Both wearing a touch of colour to coincide with family wishes. 💜

Adam has been part of our support team since December and has fit perfectly into our wee team. His role includes preparing the vehicles, driving the fleet, assisting on funerals, bringing people into our care and assisting to care for them at Cuddy-lane.

Both Adam and Fiona are a pleasure to work alongside. A little family, with a lot of heart.

Plaques are being added to the memorial stone at the Garden of Remembrance, within Dalbeattie Cemetery, by the Rotary Club of Dalbeattie.

We've seen more families opting for cremation funerals and it's nice to be able to offer a local place to hold their person's name. A place to visit, a place to spend time and a place to be remembered for years to come.

If you would like more information, or to order a plaque, pop us a message or call on 01556 610108.

Behind the scenes, funeral directors are a curious mix of calm professionalism and quiet chaos management. One moment we’re arranging the most meaningful of goodbyes, the next we’re trying to discreetly untangle a knot in a tie we swear was not that complicated five minutes ago.
There’s a lot of quiet teamwork, careful timing, and the unspoken skill of knowing exactly when to offer tissues, tea, or just silence. And somehow, in between it all, someone is always holding a pen they didn’t arrive with and no one can quite explain how.
It’s a job full of dignity, care—and the occasional “how did that happen?” moment🕊

My sincere apologies to anyone who may find this post upsetting.

This video shares the experience of a woman following the loss of her mother, who had chosen a direct cremation through an online “provider”. After a challenging initial experience, Carla reached out to her local Funeral Director for support.

I believe there is a place for both direct cremations and attended services—the most important thing is that each is carried out with care, dignity, and respect.

My colleagues and I are here to support you and are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

With care,
Rachael
