Tomorrow is World Su***de Prevention Day, and there's a free screening locally.

The Low Road is at the Pickaquoy Centre tomorrow, Thursday 10 September, from 7pm. It's a film about the toll the mental health crisis is taking on young adults, followed by a panel session chaired by the film’s writer and director Stephen Mulhearn.

More information and booking here: https://www.ohb.scot.nhs.uk/free-film-screening-of-the-low-road-on-thursday-10-september-at-7pm/

If you or someone you know is struggling, you don't have to be in crisis to ask for help. Speak to us, call NHS 24 on 111, or Samaritans free on 116 123.

Heading off to college or university this month? Check your vaccinations before you go.

The MenB vaccine is currently offered to some older teenagers and students under 25. It protects against bacteria that can cause meningitis and sepsis. Two doses are needed, at least 28 days apart, so book yours now.

Call the Vaccination Team on 0300 303 5313.

Ross Cunningham climbed all 282 of Scotland's Munros. He started when he was in the grip of severe depression and anxiety.

"Hillwalking found me," he says. "It saved my life, and it changed it."

He's telling that story at the Orkney Theatre, KGS, on Monday 7 September at 7.30pm, as part of the Science Festival.

Check out the full science festival programme here: https://oisf.org/

You don't need a Munro to feel the benefit. And if you're struggling, please don't wait until you're at your lowest to ask for help.

Speak to us, or call NHS 24 on 111.

Some of you may know the Improving the Cancer Journey service — it now has a new name:

Improving the Care Journey (ICJ).

This reflects an expansion of support beyond cancer. ICJ remains Macmillan-funded and continues to offer the same free, non-clinical, person-centred support for anyone affected by cancer in Orkney.

The service is now also supporting people living with certain long-term conditions, starting with cardiac conditions — helping with things like financial concerns, emotional wellbeing and practical day-to-day issues.

You can refer yourself, or ask us to refer you — the process hasn't changed.

Full details and referral forms are on the NHS Orkney website: https://www.ohb.scot.nhs.uk/your-health/improving-the-cancer-journey-icj/

☀️🌕Planning to watch the partial solar eclipse? Protect your eyesight!

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across Scotland on the evening of Wednesday 12 August. While it may be tempting to take a good look at this rare natural phenomenon, viewing the sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage.

Remember:
✅ Only use certified eclipse glasses or solar viewers
✅ Consider a safe indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector
❌ Never look directly at the sun
❌ Ordinary sunglasses won't protect your eyes
❌ Don't use binoculars, telescopes or cameras without specialist solar filters

If you notice blurred vision, blind spots or any changes to your sight, your local optometrist should usually be your first point of contact.

Optometrists can assess a range of eye conditions and help ensure you get the right care in the right place.
