Tonsillitis or sore throat? 🤒 You don’t need a GP appointment:

Under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme, many community pharmacies can now assess sore throats and tonsillitis. At Spa Surgery we have worked hard with our local pharmacy to get these pathways working well for our patients. A trained pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, examine you if needed, and:
⭐️Offer self-care advice and over‑the‑counter remedies
💊Supply antibiotics if clinically indicated – without you seeing a GP

This helps you get faster care and frees up GP appointments for those who need them most.

Find out more about Pharmacy First on the NHS England website:

Thank you ☺️

Spa Surgery wildflower meadow is in full bloom and is a joy to behold! 🌸🌼❤️

This was an excellent idea from Dr Forrester and forms part of our ‘greener practice’ initiative where we make small changes where possible to make environmentally friendly decisions. It was carefully planted by the Spa Surgery team who came in their days off three years ago and has taken this time to mature. How lovely does it look now? Who thinks we should make the whole area a wildflower meadow?

Thank you Dr Forrester for coordinating this excellent initiative 💕

📢 Cervical Screening Update

👩🏼‍⚕️ At Spa surgery we are lucky to have our wonderful nurses Nicky and Hannah who are both qualified to take your cervical smear and make the process as comfortable for you as possible ❤️

📩 Since July last year, if you have a cervix, are aged 25 to 49 and test negative for HPV, you will now be invited for cervical screening every FIVE years instead of every THREE. The screening interval for 50-64 years remains at five years.
🧬 This is because a negative HPV result means a very low risk of developing cervical cancer over the next five years.
✅ This change was backed by clinical evidence and recommended by the UK National Screening Committee.

📱 Digital Invitations: You may start receiving your smear test invite via the NHS App.
📬 Paper Backups: If you don’t use digital platforms, a letter will still be sent by post.
🏥 All invitations will explain how to book your appointment in the usual way — through your GP practice.

Regular screening remains the best protection against cervical cancer. If you're due your cervical screening and have any concerns, (especially if you have found a smear difficult or painful in the past) please speak to our reception team or put in an e-reception from the website and we can put your concerns to our medical team to see if we can help make the next one more comfortable.

Now you’ve checked your medications on the updated NHS App, here is some further information on our Repeat Prescription Request Process

To help us process your prescriptions safely and efficiently, please read the following information carefully.

⏳ Processing Times
• Please allow 7 days for your prescription to be ready.
This is from the time your request is received by the surgery to when it is ready for collection from your nominated chemist.
• Please do not contact the surgery to chase prescriptions.
Instead, set up the text message service at your pharmacy so they can notify you when your medication is ready.
• Please do not leave yourself with less than one week’s supply of medication before ordering.
• Please allow extra time around bank holidays, as both the surgery and pharmacies are extremely busy.
• Sometimes pharmacies have to order in medication due to manufacturer delays, which may increase waiting times.

Under exceptional circumstances, we will try to help with urgent requests, but it is your responsibility to request your medication in plenty of time.

💊 How Often We Prescribe
• We normally issue 2 months of medication at a time.
• HRT and thyroxine may be issued 3-monthly.
• Controlled drugs can only be prescribed every 28 days.
• You do not need a paper prescription, we can send you a barcode number by text message, which any pharmacy can use to download your prescription securely from the NHS Spine.

📱 Using the NHS App
• Patients can now see all their repeat items in one place, including medicines that cannot be requested yet, with clear explanations of why, for example, if it’s too soon to order again, or a review is needed. This helps people better understand their medicines, and reduces the confusion where items previously appeared "missing".

✈️ Going Away
• If you are travelling, you may request medication early; however, NHS prescriptions are usually limited to a maximum of 3 months.
• If you will be away for longer than this, you are expected to make alternative arrangements for your medication while you are away.

🧾 Medication Reviews
• We usually review medication in your birthday month (with some exceptions).
• Reviews do not always need to be done by a GP – another clinician may complete this.
• You will be contacted if an appointment is required.
• If you would like to discuss your medication, you can book an appointment with our pharmacist or talk to the community pharmacist in your chosen pharmacy.

🛒 Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicines
Some medications are not routinely prescribed on the NHS, even if you do not pay for prescriptions.
Common examples include (but are not limited to):
• Paracetamol
• Ibuprofen
• Antihistamines
• Dry-eye drops
• Similar pharmacy-available treatments
Requesting these unnecessarily wastes valuable clinical time.

🌸 Contraception Prescriptions
• Contraception can often be prescribed for longer periods than standard repeat medication if needed.
• Many contraceptive medicines are now also available directly from your local pharmacy without needing to see a GP.

🌐 If You Don’t Have Internet Access
• You can hand your request into the surgery or send it by post.
• If this is not possible, please contact the practice to discuss alternative options.

👪 Can Someone Drop My Request Off?
Yes. A friend, relative or career may hand in your repeat prescription request on your behalf.

Thank you for helping us to provide a safe and efficient service to all our patients.

Changes to the NHS App prescriptions feature gives you a complete view of ALL your active AND repeat medicines.

You can now see all your repeat items in one place, including medicines that cannot be requested yet, with clear explanations of why, for example, if it’s too soon to order again, or a review is needed.

💜 Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week 💜

Looking after your mental health during pregnancy and after having a baby is just as important as looking after your physical health 🤍

Many parents experience anxiety, low mood, overwhelm or feelings they weren’t expecting — and support is available 🌸 You are not alone, and it’s okay to ask for help.

It’s not trivial and it matters, whether it’s feeding issues, birth trauma or struggling to find time for yourself 👶🏻

If you are struggling with your mental health during pregnancy or after birth, please speak to your GP, midwife or health visitor 🩺

✨ Practice Update ✨

From 1st April, Dr Joanna Ashton has become a GP Partner, joining Drs Turner, Mawer and Bond following Dr Harrison’s retirement 🩺

Dr Ashton has been part of the practice since 2019 (with maternity leave in 2021 & 2023) and will continue her usual clinical days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays alongside her new role.

She is also one of our GP trainers, supporting and teaching our registrars 👩🏻‍⚕️

Outside of work, she’s busy with her young family, enjoys exercise, dog walks and the outdoors, and baking when she gets the chance!

Her clinical interests include mental health (including eating disorders), paediatrics, women’s health and maternity/perinatal care.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Ashton on her new role 🎉
