Feeling lonely in a relationship can be hard to make sense of, but it's more common than you'd think.

It can look like feeling disconnected from your partner, conversations that don't quite land, intimacy that's drifted, or a sense that you're living alongside each other rather than together.

It's something many people experience, but often find difficult to talk about. ❤️

This Loneliness Awareness Week, we've put together some thoughts on what relationship loneliness can look like, why it happens and some practical ways to start rebuilding connection.

The World Cup brings a lot with it - excitement, hope and the occasional late night watching penalties. ⚽

When one partner is immersed in every match and the other is feeling overlooked, what's often underneath are different needs around connection, time together and feeling valued.

Jane, one of our relationship counsellors, explains what that can look like and how open communication can help couples better understand each other's needs.

Feeling nervous about couples counselling is completely normal. For some men, there's added layers to that. What we hear most often are worries that the room won't feel balanced, or that it'll become about picking apart one person's behaviour.

Matthew, one of our specialist relationship counsellors, explains what the room really looks like. At Relate, making sure both voices are heard isn't just an intention, it's central to how our counsellors are trained.

So if you've been thinking about counselling but haven't quite got there yet - we're here. ❤️ https://bit.ly/3QvuQ6U

Working with couples is about more than having two people in the room. It means understanding the dynamics between them, navigating conflict, trust and intimacy, and helping people make sense of the things that aren't always being said out loud.

That's why relationship counselling is a distinct clinical specialism. Relate has been leading this work for decades. Our Post-Qualifying Certificate in Relational Counselling is designed for qualified counsellors who want to deepen their expertise and confidence in relationship counselling.

When you take on a caring role for a partner, your relationship doesn't disappear. But it can change in ways you never expected. 💙

This Carers Week, Tamara, one of our relationship counsellors, talks about the realities of caring within a relationship. From shifting roles and responsibilities to navigating difficult emotions, it's a reminder that your relationship matters too.

If you'd like support, whether that's ongoing counselling, one-session therapy or a conversation with a counsellor, we're here to help: https://bit.ly/4upRag6

Being open with someone you care about isn't always easy. It can feel risky to share what's really going on, especially when you're worried about how it might be received. ❤️

But honesty is one of the foundations of intimacy. Not pretending everything is fine, but finding ways to talk openly about your feelings, needs and concerns.

It doesn't have to start with a big conversation. Sometimes it's as simple as giving an honest answer when your partner asks how you are, rather than saying you're fine when you're not.

If this resonates, we've shared some practical tips on how to start being more open with your partner: https://bit.ly/4dOc2Y4

There's no such thing as a perfect relationship. Only the one that works for the people in it. 💙

Whether you're facing trust issues, struggling with conflict, feeling distant from each other or simply trying to build a stronger connection, relationship challenges are a normal part of life.

At Relate, we help people navigate the realities of modern relationships with specialist counselling, practical tools and expert support. Because getting help isn't a sign that a relationship has failed. It's a positive step towards understanding each other better and finding a way forward.

Have you ever been convinced you knew exactly what your partner meant, only to realise you'd got it completely wrong? 🤦

Jane, one of our relationship counsellors, explains how assumptions and mind reading can quietly shape the way we hear each other.
