My Psychological Wellness

My Psychological Wellness Paula Slater MSc Psych GMBPsS:
Helping adults and children discover the very best version of themselves. This is where I come in.

Since 2004, my mission has been to help and empower adults and children to overcome their most challenging obstacles and start living happier and healthier lifestyles. My extensive experience means that I'm fully equipped to guide, support and assist you in building the life you clearly deserve. I have a BA HONS Degree in Children, Schools and Families and have completed an MA in Psychology. My qu

alifications don't stop there, though; you can view them on the FAQ tab! I aim to create a life balance that prioritises your well-being and celebrates all aspects of your true self. It's time to start nurturing your body and soul again!

Children:
I have worked in education for nearly 20 years helping primary school children by giving them the tools they need to succeed, not only in education but socially and emotionally. I do this by empowering them to understand themselves better, including how their brain works and how it influences their behaviours and choices. Once children are armed with this knowledge, they can use the tools provided to improve their mental health and well-being and ultimately become happier and more confident. Adults:
I have a wealth of experience in dealing with the aftermath of abuse, domestic violence, coercive control, grief, addiction, depression, life coaching, su***de, mental health and well-being and relationships. It isn't always easy to just walk away, tell someone or move on; we first need to be able to accept what has happened, reflect, decide and then take steps to heal. I can work with you to help bring your mind and body back into equilibrium through various therapeutic techniques. I am not a counsellor, so my approach is not linked to any kind of theorist or intervention. Instead, I listen, I hear you, I discover what motivates you and then together, we explore new goals and ambitions in a realistic and time-sensitive manner. I will help you to understand yourself better and learn to love who you are. Signposting:
If for any reason, I feel that you/they require more specialised support, I will signpost you/them to the relevant services and recommend that you seek their help. My role is not to replace any required specialised service but to compliment them by motivating you/them to be inspired.

You've come this far, you've accepted that you or your child needs some extra support - well done! Now allow me to help guide you/them through to a more fulfilling stage of life, after all, we only get one chance at it so let's get it right! All I ask, is that you trust the process.

I think the whole nation is grieving right now 💔

Are you confused by how deeply affected you are by the passing of a celebrity? You could be experiencing disenfranchised grief.

This is where you grieve for someone, or something, that you feel you might not be able to grieve about because it doesn't fit with the social norm.

I want you to know this: It's ok to grieve for what has happened 💔

Furthermore you can:
💚 Acknowledge your pain.
💚 Accept that grief can trigger many different and unexpected emotions.
💚 Understand that your grieving process will be unique to you.
💚 Seek out face-to-face support from people who care about you.
💚 Support yourself emotionally by taking care of yourself physically.
💚 Recognise the difference between grief and depression

Most of all...keep talking 🤗

🎉We have our next online parental course starting on the 22nd September.
This is designed for parents with children with ADHD.

For anyone interested, please email [email protected] for a course application.

Children do not need to be diagnosed, under assessment or on the pathway to access this, but your child's GP does need to fall under Lancashire & South Cumbria ICB and you think that you want to go down the assessment pathway in the future.

Three years ago today, I graduated with my Master's in Psychology 👩‍🎓

Although today marks three years since qualifying, my journey started long before that. I've worked in psychology, education and therapeutic services since 2004, and it's those years of professional experience, combined with my Master's and my own lived experiences, that have shaped the practitioner I am today.

For years, headteachers, clinical psychologists and other professionals encouraged me to go further. They'd tell me I was capable of more and that I should continue my education. At the time, I didn't really understand what they meant because I loved the work I was already doing.

Now I do.

Since completing my Master's, I've built a private practice. Now I support adults and children, work with organisations, children's homes, law firms and safeguarding services, deliver training, and provide therapeutic support in a variety of settings. Every opportunity has allowed me to reach more people than I ever thought possible. 🤯

But the part I'm most proud of has nothing to do with my qualifications.

As a child who experienced adversity, I made a promise to myself that if I ever had the chance, I'd spend my life helping people facing their own challenges. Every day, I have the privilege of doing exactly that, and I never take it for granted.🥹

If your organisation is looking for psychological support, therapy, training or consultancy, I'd love to have a conversation. I offer bespoke packages that are tailored to the unique needs of every team, organisation and the people they support.

Looking back, they were right. And I'm so glad I listened.🫶

My approach to person-centred therapy is built on the belief that you are the subject-matter expert for your own life, not me. 🤗

My role is to create a space where you feel comfortable and safe enough to really hear yourself think.🧠

My questions are tailored to you, not just read from a script, and are designed to help you to make real and meaningful progress. 💚

If you have any more questions about my therapeutic approach, visit my website to book a free, no-obligation consultation.

Textbooks: “Development is like climbing a neat and linear staircase.” 👣

Reality: “Development is like a toddler on a bouncy castle. Wobbly, unpredictable, and occasionally face down on the floor.” 🏰

As a psychologist, I understand how worrying and uncertain it can feel when your child isn’t hitting the milestones in the order you expected. But know this:

Missing a milestone is a moment, and moments pass. 🧠

Often, it can feel like a verdict, but your child will develop in their own way and at their own pace. Sometimes they might need a helping hand from someone like me along the way, and that’s OK.

You’re navigating something that’s hard right now, and you’re doing your best. That’s what counts. 💜

Only 2 spaces left!

🌿 Supporting the People Behind the Profession 🌿

Many professionals work in roles that are emotionally demanding, fast-paced and focused on supporting others. Yet, too often, there is little time or space to reflect on the impact that work can have on wellbeing.

Reflective practice provides a safe, structured and professionally facilitated environment where staff can pause, reflect and gain insight into their experiences. It can help strengthen resilience, reduce feelings of stress and burnout, improve communication, and support healthier, more connected teams.

I am pleased to be offering Reflective Practice Packages for Teams and Organisations, including:
✅ Team Reflective Practice Sessions
✅ Individual Reflective Practice Sessions
✅ Reflective Practice Days
✅ Ongoing Reflective Practice Programmes

Whether you're a private organisation, school, charity, social care provider or NHS service, sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of your team.

📍 Based in Preston, Lancashire. Happy to travel up to 25 miles.

If you'd like to find out more or discuss how reflective practice could support your organisation, I'd be delighted to have a conversation.

Would I even be doing a British summer right if I wasn’t complaining about it being too hot, too cold or experiencing all four seasons in one day?! ☔☀️

But whatever the weather, I do love a good summer adventure!

Whether it’s a walk in the park or an accidental hair-raising outdoor adventure experience caused by my rather… erm… interesting map reading skills, I love connecting with nature and the people I care about over the summer months. 🥰

Drop me a comment and let me know how you like to unwind outside of work over summer. 👇

📖 Emotional dysregulation = When tiny hiccups feel like full blown emergencies for no apparent reason.

ADHD impacts your brain’s ability to pause between thinking and responding. 💡

It’s a bit like riding a bike with a sticky brake. Most of the time you can forget about it, but oh boy, you’re going to notice it as you start rolling down that hill trying to control the momentum. 😮

When your brain is hurtling down this hill, emotions arrive fast, loud, and all at once.

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Understanding emotional dysregulation is an important step towards making real and meaningful change.💚
