An ADHD assessment should give you more than a yes or no answer.

The NHS estimates that around 2,498,000 people in England have ADHD, including people without a diagnosis. Of these, around 741,000 are children and young people aged 5 to 24.

In December 2025, there were up to 735,157 open referrals that may have been for an ADHD assessment in England.

Behind those numbers are people who may have spent months or years wondering, searching and trying to make sense of things.

🔎 What are the signs of ADHD?
🧠 What are the symptoms of ADHD?
🌙 Why can’t I sleep properly?
📋 Why do everyday demands feel harder than they should?

When it reaches the point of booking an assessment, it is worth knowing what to ask first.

👨‍⚕️ Who carries out the assessment?
📋 What evidence is needed?
📝 What does the report include?
➡️ What happens afterwards?
💊 Can medication be discussed if appropriate?

At The Therapy Company, adult ADHD assessments include the full diagnostic assessment, a detailed clinical report and discussion and initiation of medication where clinically appropriate and a diagnosis is made.

Appointments are with highly experienced, GMC-registered Consultant Psychiatrists and assessments are carried out in line with NICE guidance for ADHD diagnosis and management.

Adult ADHD assessments are available in Preston, with appointments currently available within 7 to 10 working days.

If you’ve been looking into ADHD and aren’t sure what the next step should be, this post may be worth saving.

Stress does not always look like a dramatic breaking point.

Sometimes it looks more like:

🛌 Lying awake even though you’re exhausted.
😤 Snapping at small things.
📖 Reading the same line three times.
📱 Putting off messages.
🍽️ Eating differently.
🥺 Feeling teary, flat, tense, restless or constantly switched on.

A lot of people search for things like “why am I so stressed all the time?”, “signs of burnout”, “stress affecting sleep”, “stress and anxiety symptoms”, “how to manage stress”, “therapy for stress”, or “private mental health support near me” because they know something feels off, but they are not always sure what to call it.

If more of it feels familiar than you expected, it may be worth asking yourself:

🛌 What needs more rest?
🤝 What needs more support?
🎈 What needs less pressure?
🧭 What is actually within my control right now?

Small changes can help, such as getting outside, talking things through, setting clearer boundaries, protecting sleep where possible, or breaking one overwhelming problem into smaller steps.

And if things have been feeling harder to manage for a while, speaking to someone can be a helpful first step.

The Therapy Company offers therapy and private psychiatry support for adults from our Preston clinic, with online appointments also available.

Save this as a reminder, or share it with someone who has been carrying a lot recently.

Looking fine does not always mean coping well.

For many people in 2026, life can feel like going to work, parenting, replying to messages, doing the school run, keeping appointments, paying bills, answering emails and trying to keep everything moving.

From the outside, it can look like everything is being managed.

Behind the scenes, it may feel very different.

- Overwhelmed.
- Drained.
- Unlike yourself.
- Struggling to switch off.
- Quietly wondering whether counselling, therapy or speaking to a private psychiatrist could help.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to mental health support.

Counselling or talking therapy can give people space to talk openly, feel heard and work through what has been going on.

A private psychiatrist or online psychiatrist appointment may be more appropriate when someone needs a mental health assessment, diagnosis, medication advice or a treatment plan.

The Therapy Company provides private mental health support in Preston and online across the UK, including private counselling, therapy, private psychiatry, online psychiatrist appointments and support for anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD and autism assessments.

If you are not sure where to start, that is ok.

You can contact our team and we can help you understand which type of support may be most appropriate.

ADHD, autism and anxiety can feel difficult to untangle.

Not because people are “overthinking it”, but because some experiences can overlap.

A child who avoids school might be anxious, they might be overwhelmed, they might be struggling with attention, routine, sensory demands, social pressure or something else entirely.

An adult who feels constantly exhausted, distracted or unable to cope may not know whether it is anxiety, ADHD, autism, burnout, or a mix of things.

That is why an assessment and professional support matters.

It is not about putting a label on everything. It is about understanding what may be going on, what support can help, and what the next step might be.

The Therapy Company supports adults, children, young people and families with ADHD assessments, autism assessments, therapy and private psychiatry support.

Based in Preston, Lancashire, with face-to-face and online appointments available.

If things feel confusing, you do not need to work it all out alone.

26/05/2026

After a bank holiday, normal life can suddenly feel loud, heavy or overwhelming again.

Back to work, school runs, house jobs, responding to emails, returning missed calls, meeting deadlines or replying to messages.

The worries that went quiet for a day or two come rushing back as 'normal life' resumes.

Sometimes a short break gives you just enough space to realise how much you have been carrying.

Support does not have to start with a big decision. It can start with asking a question, talking things through, or finding out what kind of support may be helpful.

The Therapy Company supports adults, children, young people and families with mental health and emotional wellbeing in Preston, Lancashire, with online appointments also available where appropriate.

Sharing in case today feels a bit heavier than expected 💚

It is very common for people to be unsure whether they need therapy, psychiatry, or something else entirely.

That uncertainty can stop people asking for help, especially when the words sound similar or the next step does not feel obvious.

Therapy is focused on talking things through, understanding what is happening emotionally, and building ways to manage thoughts, feelings, experiences or patterns that are affecting day-to-day life.

Psychiatry is medical mental health support. A psychiatric assessment can help with understanding symptoms, considering diagnosis where appropriate, reviewing treatment options, and discussing whether medication support may be suitable.

You do not have to work all of this out on your own before making an enquiry.

If you are not sure which route fits, it is okay to say that. A first message can simply explain what has been happening and ask what kind of support may be appropriate.

The Therapy Company offers talking therapies and private psychiatry appointments for adults, children and young people, with appointments available in Preston and online where suitable.

A lot of people hear the word psychiatry and assume it means things have reached a crisis point, or that the appointment will only be about medication.

That is not always the case.

A private psychiatric assessment can help someone understand what may be contributing to the difficulties they are experiencing, what support options may be suitable, and whether diagnosis, therapy, medication or further assessment should be considered.

For some people, the main question is “what is actually going on?” For others, it may be about reviewing symptoms, understanding treatment options, or getting clearer guidance on what the next step could be.

The Therapy Company offers private psychiatry appointments for adults, children and young people, with face-to-face appointments available in Preston and online appointments available where suitable.

You do not need to know exactly what help is needed before making an enquiry.

A short message explaining what has been happening can be enough to ask whether private psychiatry may be an appropriate route.

Asking for help can feel difficult when you do not know what to say.

That is why a first step does not need to be perfect.

It might simply be:

1️⃣ Writing down what has changed
2️⃣ Noting how long it has been happening
3️⃣ Choosing one trusted person to tell
4️⃣ Sending a short enquiry
5️⃣ Asking what support route may fit best

You do not need to explain everything clearly before reaching out.

You also do not need to know straight away whether counselling, CBT, EMDR therapy, private psychiatry, an ADHD assessment or an autism assessment is the right route.

Sometimes the first step is just asking what support may be available.

At The Therapy Company in Preston, our team supports adults, children, young people and families with mental health and emotional wellbeing, with appointments available face-to-face and online.

If this feels useful, feel free to share it. It might help someone take a small first step. 💚

🎗️ It’s Mental Health Awareness Week.

A good reminder that support does not always start with a big conversation.

Sometimes it starts with one small action.

💬 Sending a message.
📅 Booking an appointment.
🗣️ Telling someone you have not felt like yourself.
🤝 Asking what support is available.
⏸️ Taking one proper pause instead of carrying on as normal.

You do not need to have the right words before reaching out. A lot of people do not.

At The Therapy Company in Preston, our team supports adults, children, young people and families with mental health and emotional wellbeing.

This includes talking therapies, private psychiatry, ADHD assessments, autism assessments, and support when you are not quite sure where to start.

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme is action.

And action can be smaller than people think.

If this feels useful, feel free to share it. It might be the reminder someone else needs today. 💚

Exam stress can affect more than revision.

For some children and young people, the pressure starts to show up in quieter ways.

🛏️👀 struggling to sleep
😤💬 snapping over small things
📝⏸️ avoiding revision
😟💭 losing confidence
🙂🫥 saying “I’m fine” when they clearly are not

For parents, it can be hard to know what is normal exam pressure and what might need a bit more support.

GCSEs, A-levels, mocks, revision timetables and pressure from school can all feel like part of exam season.

But if exam stress is starting to affect sleep, mood, confidence, anxiety, family life or day-to-day coping, it is worth noticing.

Avoidance is not always laziness.

Sometimes starting revision feels too big. Sometimes the fear of getting it wrong feels bigger than the task itself. Sometimes they just do not have the words to explain what is going on.

A calm first step can help.

That might be asking one gentle question, keeping routines steady, focusing on the next small step, or reminding them that exams are important - but they are not their whole identity.

If exam pressure is affecting your child’s sleep, mood, confidence or everyday life, speaking to someone outside the situation may help.

The Therapy Company supports children, young people and families with calm, practical mental health support.
