Every additional airway attempt increases the chance of patient harm.

The collaborative reinforced what many clinicians already know:
Repeated attempts can lead to worsening hypoxia, hypotension, and preventable deterioration.

The goal isn’t “keep trying.”

The goal is:
one deliberate, optimized best attempt.

That means:
✔ oxygenation first
✔ clear backup plans
✔ knowing when to stop and reset

Quality airway management is patient-centered airway management.

When blood sugar drops too low, every minute matters.

Hypoglycemia can quickly affect a person's ability to think clearly, communicate, or care for themselves. That's why timely recognition and treatment are so important.

The NEMSQA Hypoglycemia Measure helps EMS agencies evaluate whether patients experiencing low blood sugar are receiving the care they need when they need it most.

Later this month, our region will have a unique and profound opportunity to gather and pay our respects to one of our own.

On Monday, June 29th at 10:00 AM, the National EMS Memorial Moving Honors (https://www.national-ems-memorial.org/events-2/moving-honors/) procession will be making a special tribute stop at the LifeNet Ticonderoga Base (1203 State Hwy 9N, Ticonderoga, NY 12883).

This traveling memorial crosses the country to remember emergency medical and air medical providers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. This year's procession is stopping specifically to honor the memory and line-of-duty sacrifice of paramedic Kevin Robert.

Because the caravan is on a tight national schedule enroute to the national Weekend of Honor, this tribute stop will be brief.

We want to ensure a strong showing from our EMS, air medical, and first responder community to stand together, support Kevin’s family, and honor his legacy. Because space at the base is limited and the timing is precise, we need to provide organizers with a rough head count of attendees as soon as possible.

Please shoot a message to Mike McEvoy to let him know if you (and any colleagues, crew members, or family) plan to attend, the total number of people in your group, and if you plan to bring apparatus ([email protected]).

Thank you for your dedication to our EMS family, and for helping us show Kevin’s loved ones how much his service meant to all of us.

Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere. When someone close by steps in, survival chances can double or even triple.

You don’t need medical training to save a life with CPR. You need knowledge, courage and willingness to act. The power is in your hands.

Pain is one of the most common experiences for injured patients.

Before it can be treated, it has to be recognized.

One NEMSQA quality measure looks at whether EMS clinicians assessed and documented pain for injured patients during transport.

It sounds simple, but small steps like asking about pain and documenting the response help create better patient experiences and better care.

Sometimes quality improvement starts with the basics.

When we talk about airway quality, it’s easy to focus on the moment of intubation.

But the collaborative showed something important:
The best airway outcomes started long before the first attempt.

Pre-oxygenation. Positioning. Role assignment. Equipment readiness. Shared team planning.

First-pass success isn’t just operator skill.

It’s system preparation.

That shift in thinking changes everything.
