June is Men’s Health Month, and we need to talk about the physical cost of the "tough it out" mentality.

Society often teaches men to internalize pressure, treating vulnerability as a weakness. But ignoring stress doesn't make it disappear, it just forces your body to carry the burden instead.

True strength isn’t about white-knuckling your way through burnout. It’s about recognizing when your system is overloaded and taking proactive steps to reset.

Think of therapy the same way you think of the gym, a financial advisor, or routine maintenance on your truck. It is not about complaining; it is a strategic space to offload pressure, sharpen your focus, and build practical tools to handle the demands of everyday life.

Taking care of your mind is a foundational part of your overall fitness.

True affirmation means ensuring mental health support is accessible, local, and safe.

While Pride is a season of joy, it is also a reminder that the LGBTQ+ community faces disproportionate barriers to receiving identity-affirming mental health care. Systemic stigma and a lack of specialized training leave too many people struggling to find spaces where they can be entirely themselves.

If you are looking for dedicated, q***r-competent care in the Annapolis area, these local organizations are built for you.

👥 Peer Support & Community Advocacy
* PFLAG Annapolis / Anne Arundel County: Facilitates peer-led support groups for youth, adults, and allies twice a month at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis (Dubois Rd). Check their website's Find Resources Page for educational links, libraries, and toolkits.
* Annapolis Pride (annapolispride.org): The premier regional nonprofit celebrating and empowering the q***r community. Their site serves as the central hub for local business networking, connection events, and an extensive local community directory.

🏥 Clinical Care & Specialized Health Equity
* GBCC Behavioral Health: Provides an LGBTQ Affirming Care Line specifically designed for targeted mental health counseling and navigation support.
* The Refuge by Lotus Psychotherapy: Specializes in affirming clinical services, offering Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) focused heavily on transgender community care.
* Chase Brexton Health Care (Glen Burnie): Located just outside Annapolis. Features The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity, delivering full primary health integration and dedicated behavioral health care.

☎️ 24/7 Safe & Identity-Affirming Helplines
* The Trevor Project: Crisis intervention for LGBTQ+ young people. Call 866-488-7386 or text START to 678-678.
* Trans Lifeline: Peer-led support hotlines run entirely by trans and nonbinary individuals for safety. Call 877-565-8860.
* The LGBT National Help Center: Free, confidential peer support spaces, senior chat infrastructure, and youth hotlines. Call 888-843-4564.

There is no script that makes this easy.

When a family goes through a major transition: a separation, a divorce, or a parent moving out, the moment of telling the children is one of the hardest conversations a parent will ever have.

Children are deeply perceptive. Left without clear information, they often fill in the gaps themselves, sometimes blaming themselves for adult decisions.

Our Annapolis therapists work with families navigating these exact transitions. We find that how parents handle this initial conversation shapes how children experience everything that follows.

If you are preparing for this conversation, ground yourself in what your children actually need to hear most:

👤 "This was an adult decision." The details of your relationship are not theirs to carry or fix.
🗓️ "Both parents are staying." Give them concrete details. Where will they live? What does Tuesday morning look like now?
⚓ "Nothing you did caused this." Say it out loud, even if it seems obvious. Children are developmentally prone to self-blame.
🌿 "You are allowed to feel whatever you feel." Your job in that moment is not to fix their sadness: it is to make them feel safe enough to express it.

Our latest blog post acts as a practical, step-by-step framework for setting the stage, what to actually say, and how to navigate your own emotions in the room.

We are pausing today for a day of solemn remembrance for those who gave everything in service. At Cedar Counseling & Wellness, we believe grief and gratitude can coexist. We honor the lives lost and the families who carry their legacy.

Grief doesn’t follow a calendar. A dedicated day of remembrance is meaningful, but loss doesn’t end when the holiday does. If today feels heavy, know your emotions are valid. We are here to provide support whenever you need it.

Earlier this month, we highlighted Maternal Mental Health Week, but these vital conversations require ongoing attention.

Motherhood is a beautiful journey, but it can also bring unexpected anxiety, overwhelming stress, and intrusive thoughts that no one warns you about. If you have ever felt guilty for having anxious or scary thoughts, please know you are not a bad mom. You are just a human being navigating a massive life transition.

To help continue this conversation, our team highly recommends picking up a copy of Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts. It is an incredibly gentle, validating guide that breaks down the stigma around postpartum mental health and offers practical tools for coping.

If you need a safe space to process your own transition into motherhood, click the link in our bio to connect with one of our counselors today.
