Pregnancy & General Surgery: When Should You See a Surgeon?

🤰 Pregnancy comes with plenty of aches and changes—but not every new pain is simply part of being pregnant.

Pregnant patients can develop many of the same conditions treated by a general surgeon, including:

• Gallstones and gallbladder attacks
• Appendicitis
• Umbilical and other abdominal wall hernias
• Abscesses, cysts and soft-tissue infections
• Other causes of persistent or concerning abdominal pain

When a surgical condition develops during pregnancy, treatment is individualized. Not every problem requires surgery, and when surgery is necessary, timing and treatment decisions should take both mom and baby into consideration. 💗

At ATX Robotic Surgery, our general surgeons evaluate surgical conditions during pregnancy and can coordinate care with your OB/GYN and other members of your healthcare team to determine an appropriate treatment plan.

If you’re pregnant and have been referred to a general surgeon—or have a known gallbladder, hernia or other surgical concern—we’re here to help.

🙋 A question we are asked often is Whether Exercise or other Strength Training can repair a Hernia ⁉️

Unfortunately… no. 🙁
Exercise may strengthen the muscles around a hernia, but it does NOT repair the hole or weakness in the abdominal wall that caused the hernia in the first place.
In some cases, certain exercises — especially heavy straining or improper core workouts — can actually make symptoms worse. 🤯
Common signs of a hernia may include:
• A bulge in the abdomen or groin
• Pain or pressure with lifting or coughing
• Burning or aching discomfort
• Symptoms that worsen with activity
That said, staying active and maintaining core strength can still be important for overall health and recovery.
The key is getting the RIGHT evaluation and guidance.
Some hernias can be monitored for a period of time, while others may require surgical repair to prevent worsening symptoms or complications.
Today, many hernia repairs can be performed minimally invasively or robotically.
At ATX Robotic Surgery, our board-certified surgeons provide personalized hernia care near you in Central Texas.

Don't Ignore Persistent Pain After Eating

Does discomfort in the upper right side of your abdomen keep coming back—especially after meals? Your gallbladder may be contributing to your symptoms.

Gallbladder conditions can present in different ways, but common signs include:

🔹 Pain in the upper right abdomen or beneath the ribs
🔹 Pain that occurs after eating, particularly rich or fatty meals
🔹 Nausea or vomiting
🔹 Bloating or a feeling of indigestion
🔹 Pain that travels to the back or right shoulder

If these symptoms sound familiar, it's important to be evaluated. Several conditions can cause abdominal pain, and an accurate diagnosis is the first step toward appropriate treatment.

At ATX Robotic Surgery, our board-certified general surgeons provide individualized evaluations near you to determine the cause of your symptoms and discuss treatment options based on your specific needs. If gallbladder removal is recommended, many patients are candidates for minimally invasive surgery, which often results in less incisions and faster recovery.

Whether you've recently experienced your first gallbladder attack or have been dealing with symptoms for some time, we're here to answer your questions and help you understand your options.

Did you know that gallbladder symptoms can become so routine that you may not realize how much they’re affecting your everyday life?

A patient told us today how much better he felt after having his gallbladder removed. What struck us was that he hadn’t realized how much his gallbladder had been holding him back until after surgery.

Not everyone with gallbladder disease experiences severe, unmistakable attacks. Symptoms can include recurring discomfort after eating, nausea, bloating, indigestion, pain in the upper right abdomen, or pain that travels to the back or right shoulder.

And sometimes the signs are more subtle: avoiding certain foods, changing what or when you eat, or planning around the possibility that a meal might make you feel bad.

Over time, those adjustments can simply become your “normal.”

If you have gallstones or recurring symptoms that may be related to your gallbladder, a general surgery evaluation can help determine the cause and whether gallbladder removal may be appropriate for you.

Sometimes you don’t realize what’s been holding you back until it isn’t anymore.
