Juneteenth honors the day when the word of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. Although enslaved people were legally declared free in Confederate states by the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, enforcement depended on Union military control. Many enslaved people in Texas did not actually learn they were free until Union troops arrived on June 19, 1865.

Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, history, and hope, and an opportunity to reflect on the importance of dignity, equality, and community.
