We've got a new goal at Fig Tree: zero waste. 🌿

Doctor's offices make a surprising amount of trash, so we're working to send as close to nothing as we can to the landfill. We sort everything through Ridwell, TerraCycle, compost and recycling. We offer patients filtered water from stainless steel cups, wash our dishes (never disposables) and compost our food scraps. We politely say no when reps offer paper coupons or samples we don't need. Our resources are digital so you can find them again anytime, and we support brands that do the same.

Did we send you home with a sample in plastic film? Bring the wrapper back and we'll take care of it.

We don't know of another Boulder medical practice doing this. If you do, tell us! We'd love to swap notes.

Healthier kids, healthier planet they'll inherit. πŸ’š

The email from school lands and your stomach drops. Take a breath β€” this one is far more fixable, and less dramatic, than its reputation.

Start here: your child does not need to miss school. The AAP is explicitly against "no-nit" policies. By the time lice are found, they've usually been on that head for weeks, and classroom spread is uncommon. Treat tonight, go back tomorrow.

And it says nothing about your housekeeping. Lice spread by direct head-to-head contact β€” play, sleepovers, selfies. They crawl; they cannot jump or fly, and they carry no disease. Clean hair is not protective and dirty hair is not the cause.

How to actually get rid of them:

β€’ Find them properly. Bright light, a fine-toothed comb, wet hair, small sections behind the ears and at the neckline. Nits are glued on and won't brush away β€” that's how you tell them from dandruff.
β€’ Treat on day 1. Permethrin 1% (Nix) or pyrethrin (RID). Regular shampoo, no conditioner (it blocks the medicine), towel-dry to damp, saturate from the neckline outward, 10 minutes, rinse.
β€’ Treat again on day 9. This is the step people skip, and it's the reason lice come back.
β€’ Comb the nits out of wet hair, section by section, between treatments.

Skip the house panic. Lice die in under 48 hours off a scalp. Wash what touched the head in the last two days on hot, bag what you can't wash for two weeks, soak brushes, vacuum. No sprays, no foggers β€” and skip the internet remedies. Mayonnaise, essential oils and kerosene are ineffective at best.

Check everyone in the house over the next two weeks. Call us if there are still live lice after two correct treatments, if your child is under two months, if the scalp looks red, crusted or painful, or if you just aren't sure what you're seeing β€” send us a photo.

Posts like this one come straight out of our Fig Tree parent guides β€” written by us, cited to the AAP and CDC, and updated as the evidence moves. Our members get the whole library, just for being members.

Evidence based. Fig Tree approved. We're here for you β€” reach out anytime.

Fellow ADHDers: we could talk to you all day. (And if you've met us, you know we might.)

Our favorite hyperfocus? Your family. Falling down pediatric research rabbit holes. Dreaming up new ways to make Fig Tree better, then actually doing them.

We also get the hard parts. The burnout. The big feelings. The perfectionism. The rejection sensitivity β€” so, seriously, 5-star reviews only. πŸ˜‰

Whether it's you, your kid, or the whole household: you're in good company here.

We're here for you β€” reach out anytime.

The thing most families don't expect about membership isn't the access. It's how much of the day it quietly deletes.

Walk out with the medicine in your hand. Basic meds are included or at cost, dispensed right in the office. No second stop at 6pm with a sick kid in the car seat. Basic labs work the same way.

Minor procedures happen in the room. Laceration repair, wound care, splinting, wart freezing. Ear piercing at no additional charge, done safely, by people who do this for a living.

Come to us, or we'll come to you. Office visits, telehealth, and home visits, all scheduled with little to no wait. A sick kid doesn't always have to be moved to be seen.

Mental and behavioral health is primary care here. ADHD, anxiety, depression, behavior concerns β€” assessed and managed by the doctor who already knows your child, including medication management. Not a six-month referral to a stranger.

And it's all one fee. Wellness visits, sports physicals, chronic care, vaccines, acute illness, strep and flu tests β€” included, priced up front, with no per-visit math and no surprise bill three weeks later.

Healthcare shouldn't be transactional. That's the whole reason we built it this way.

Curious what it would look like for your family? A meet and greet is the easiest place to start. We're here for you β€” reach out anytime.

Fire c***r season is here! πŸŽπŸ§„πŸŒΆοΈ

Bring the kids and make a jar together at our Family Fire C***r Workshop with herbalist Tara Lanich-LaBrie of themedicinecircle and Dr. Ali Levine. Fire c***r is a traditional kitchen tonic of apple c***r vinegar, honey, garlic and warming herbs. Your kitchen will smell amazing, and your kids will definitely have opinions about it.

Each family makes and takes home an 8 oz jar. You'll also learn the traditional uses of each herb and pick up herbal tea tips for fall and winter over a warm cup.

πŸ“… Saturday, Nov 7 Β· 3–5 pm
πŸ“ Fig Tree Pediatrics, 3360 Mitchell Ln A, Boulder
πŸ‘§ Kindergarten through teens, each with a parent or caregiver

Live from the AAP conference: sleep struggles happen at every age, from night wakings in toddlers to too little sleep in teens, and most are behavioral. That's good news, because habits can help!

Swipe for what's common at each age, how we approach insomnia (spoiler: habits first, always), and the SLEEP checklist to try at home.

Bedtime battles at your house? Bring them to your next visit.

"Is this forever?" It's one of the first questions families ask when we start a mental health medication, and the answer is: not necessarily. Kids routinely get better, and part of good care is knowing how to come off medication safely and effectively.

One thing we watch for while tapering: symptoms that show up within days of lowering a dose are usually withdrawal, while symptoms that return weeks to months later and look like the original illness may be relapse. Telling them apart helps us decide whether to slow down or revisit treatment.

Please don't stop a medication on your own. Reach out and we'll make a plan together.

I learned so much from how Dr. Todd Wolynn modeled Kids Plus Pediatrics in Pittsburgh during my training: prioritizing breastfeeding medicine, parental support, community education, integrated mental health and complex care. Excited to learn more about his new work with the Trusted Messenger Program and to get to share what we're building at Fig Tree!

Celeb sighting at the AAP conference! 🀩

We finally met every pediatrician's favorite character of the winter: the snot sucker herself.

Stuffy season is coming. Our go-to for little noses: saline drops first to loosen things up, then suction. Babies breathe (and eat, and sleep) so much better with a clear nose.
