A calmer evening starts before you get into bed. Try dimming the lights an hour early, putting your phone down, and doing one quiet activity — reading, stretching, or simply sitting with a cup of tea. Small, repeated signals and soft lighting tell your body and mind it's time to rest.

Not every counselor is the right match for every person, and that's completely normal. A good first session should feel like the start of a genuine connection, not reviewing a checklist. If it doesn't feel right, it's okay to say so — a good counselor will offer to help you find someone who's a better fit, rather than take it personally.

If your progress feels like two steps forward and one step back, that's not a sign you're doing it wrong — that's what healing actually looks like for most people. Give yourself the same grace and compassion you'd offer someone else going through the same thing.

When people hear "recovery," they often think only of recovery from substance use disorders. Often people are surprised to hear that recovery is a much broader word — it can mean healing from grief, anxiety, trauma, burnout, or a difficult life transition. Whatever you are recovering from, the process of moving forward deserves care and support.

If you want to try journaling and a blank white page feels intimidating, try one or all of these prompts:
1) What do I need more of in my life right now?
2) What's one thing that I am grateful for today?
3) What is one success I had this week, even if it's something small?

There is no pressure to write a lot or to write perfectly — write until you feel satisfied.

There's an old idea that needing help means you've failed somehow. It's very much the opposite: recognizing when something is too heavy to carry alone, and doing something about it, takes real courage. It takes strength to reach out for help.

Getting out of bed. Making one phone call. Showing up to a social engagement you almost canceled. These actions don't look particularly impressive from the outside, but they matter — a lot. Progress in recovery is rarely dramatic. It's built from small, repeated choices that move you in the right direction.

Try this the next time stress creeps up: Breathe in slowly through your nose, saying to yourself in your mind while you breathe "I know that I am breathing in." Don't try to control the breath. Next, exhale slowly (either through the nose or mouth), saying to yourself in your mind "I know that am breathing out." Again, don't try to control the breath, count it, or try to pause or hold it. Continue to breathe naturally, and narrate to yourself in your mind when you are breathing in or breathing out. If you get distracted, refocus on the breath. A minute or two is often enough to feel a shift.
