Feel familiar? Back to school is exhausting, for all of us.

Two weeks in and the wheels are already coming off for a lot of families. Meltdowns over homework that used to be easy. Silence at dinner where there used to be stories. A child who seems more tired now than they were in August.

This isn't a discipline problem. It's a brain-load problem. Two weeks of re-learning how to sit still, filter noise, and switch gears all day catches up. The slump isn't them falling apart, it's the bill coming due for an adjustment nobody talks about.

It gets easier, usually by week 3-4. Until then: lower the bar on the small stuff, protect sleep, and don't mistake the slump for something bigger. If it's still this hard by early-October, that's worth a real conversation.

You're not doing it wrong. They're not being difficult. Everyone's just adjusting.

This is your brain. 🥚

If you caught that reference, you're probably in the right demographic for this post.

We talk a lot about the kids around here. But what about the moms raising them?

60% of women in perimenopause experience brain fog. The kind that makes you forget a word mid-sentence, lose your keys for the third time this week, or lie awake at 3am even when you're exhausted.

It's not aging. It's not stress. It's your brain navigating a real hormonal shift, one that affects sleep, mood, focus, and emotional regulation in measurable ways.

Here's what most people don't know: those symptoms show up in a brain map.

The sleep disruption. The overactivated anxiety patterns. The areas of the brain running on empty. A qEEG brain map gives us an actual picture of what's happening, not a checklist of symptoms, not a guess.

And neurofeedback trains the brain toward calmer, more regulated patterns. Better sleep. Clearer thinking. Less reactivity. Not by treating perimenopause but by supporting the brain underneath it.

If you've been white-knuckling your way through this season, it might be worth seeing what's actually going on in there.

Every August it hits the same way.

Fresh cuts. New backpacks. Bright white sneakers. Silly faces before the bus comes.

And somewhere underneath all of it: a brain that's about to be asked to do a lot.

The back to school transition is harder on the brain than most of us realize. Sleep schedules that drifted all summer don't just snap back. The prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for focus, impulse control, and emotional regulation) needs time to re-engage with the demands of a school day.

A few things that actually help:

⏰ Start shifting bedtimes now, not the night before. Even 15 minutes earlier each night makes a difference.

🍳 Don't skip breakfast. Protein within 90 minutes of waking fuels focus all morning. Eggs, Greek yogurt, a smoothie. Pick something that works.

🌳 Get outside after school before homework. Even 15 minutes changes the brain's chemistry for the rest of the evening.

The full breakdown, including what to watch for when the transition feels harder than it should, is on the blog this week.

This is what a month of at-home neurofeedback looked like for one family.

Siblings. Their own home. Their own schedule. No extra appointments on the calendar.

Better sleep. Lighter moods. Siblings going from constant conflict to something that actually looks like normal sibling behavior.

Mom didn't have one dramatic breakthrough moment. She saw a gradual shift over the few weeks and results she didn't expect to experience so quickly.

At-home neurofeedback kits are available now. Curious if this could work for your family? Reach out!

We had a great college experience. But if we're honest, we both wish we'd said yes to more. Study abroad wasn't on our radar back then. We stayed pretty comfortable inside our bubble.

So we've been saying it to our kids since they were old enough to understand what college meant: go while you can. Go before jet lag hits you for a week. Before middle seat economy feels like a problem. Before you've built a life so comfortable and demanding that leaving it feels impossible.

A couple of months ago our oldest went to South Africa.

Early morning meetings. After-work drinks in a hotel lobby with people he probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with on campus. Navigating a new city. Figuring it out as he went. And he absolutely loved it.

Here's what the brain science actually says about it: new environments switch off autopilot. Navigating unfamiliar places activates the hippocampus (your brain's memory and learning center.) Novel experiences build new neural pathways. And even the inconvenient moments like the wrong train, the wrong turn, the uncomfortable conversation with a stranger, those are often where the most growth happens.

The brain doesn't get stronger from comfort. It gets stronger from challenge, novelty, and connection with people who see the world differently than you do.

Take the trip. Your brain will thank you for it.

Nobody needs another appointment on the calendar.

We know what the schedule looks like. School. Practice. Work. Dinner. Repeat. Adding another commute to a clinic, even one doing meaningful work, isn't always realistic.

That's why we added an at-home option.

Same neurofeedback technology we use at NeuroNook. Same training protocols. Same remote oversight from our team. Just from your couch, your bedroom, your wherever.

Your brain doesn't care where it trains. It just needs the reps.

At-home neurofeedback kits are available now for current and new NeuroNook clients. Your brain is ready, are you?

We've spent years on the sideline watching our children compete. Softball. Baseball. Basketball. Soccer. Track.

We have spent thousands of hours and dollars on hitting lessons, gym time, speed training, camps, and skills clinics. All of it training the body. All of it training the skill.

Almost none of it training the brain.

And yet ...what separates the good from the great at every level isn't physical. It's the athlete who resets after a bad at-bat. Who stays composed when the game is on the line. Who doesn't let one mistake become two.

That capacity is trainable. Elite athletes have known this for years.

Lucas Giolito credited neurofeedback for going from the weakest starter in baseball to an American League All-Star. Kerri Walsh-Jennings added brain training before the 2012 Olympics and said she felt like a different athlete. Italy's 2006 World Cup team called it their secret weapon.

Most athletes train everything except the one thing that determines how they perform under pressure. If you or your teen is competing at any level, have you thought about training their brain alongisde their bodies? We can help.

Nothing screams summer quite like a road trip 🚙

I remember driving to Pennsylvania with my mom and my grandparents to visit family. The AAA TripTik was the very best thing, along with logging the miles and gas on a steno pad, eating Combos in the back seat. Seatbelts were optional back there. Sort of.

When we first moved to Charlotte, I drove back and forth to Ohio once a month to build a business. My girls were always my sidekicks. Toddlers in car seats, singing along, there for the ride with Mom. Eight hours. No screens. Just music and each other. (I can still catch myself seeing those little girls in the rearview mirror.)

This summer the three of us are hitting the road again. 1,500+miles, multiple states, 19 days together. Since sports run our summers these days, we're making the most of the schedule. There's a concert, some downtime, and exploring along the way.

We have a shared playlist, a baggie of life questions to ask each other, and lots (and lots) of snacks.

Will they phone rot some? Of course. But here's what we know from our work at The Loft .. connection, movement, being together without an agenda, these are exactly the things that support a healthy brain.

Turns out a road trip checks a lot of the boxes.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for the people we love is just show up and drive.
What are your road trip favorites? Drop them below, we're building our list.

We're right there with you on this one.

We are the first generation of parents navigating this in real time. There's no roadmap, no grandparents who've been here before, no long-term studies that have caught up yet. None of us are doing it perfectly.

But here's some research we can work with right now: the brain is remarkably adaptable. Small, consistent changes in the right direction add up. And the habits that protect it most aren't that complicated. They're just easy to let slide.

The Big Three aren't about perfection. They're about paying attention to the most important things. Making one small change that your teen's brain (and yours!) will actually feel.

Swipe through and pick yours.
