The best pencil grip might not be a grip at all. ✏️

Occupational therapists don’t choose pencil grips based on which one creates the most “perfect-looking” grasp. They look at what’s making writing difficult for that particular child:

• Is the pencil slipping?
• Is the child pressing too hard or too lightly?
• Does their hand get tired or hurt?
• Are they struggling to control the pencil?
• Is the effort affecting their speed or legibility?

Different tools provide different kinds of support. Some guide finger placement. Some make the pencil easier to hold. A weighted pencil can provide additional proprioceptive feedback, helping some children feel the pencil more clearly in their hand.

But sometimes, an OT may start with something much simpler: a golf pencil. Its shorter length can make it easier for small hands to control and encourage movement from the fingertips.

Not every unconventional grasp needs to be corrected. The goal is writing that is comfortable, legible and efficient.

If handwriting is consistently painful, exhausting or frustrating, an occupational therapist can help identify what’s getting in the way.

Instead of asking your child to say more, try giving them a little more language to listen to. When they use a word, build on it with a short phrase that adds meaning or detail.

Back-to-school prep isn't just backpacks and school supplies. It's making sure your child can handle the bathroom on their own too 🧻

School bathrooms often look and sound different than home: different soap, different faucets, paper towels or air dryers instead of a towel on the hook. A few practice reps at home can make day one feel a lot less overwhelming.

Learning to zip a jacket is a small skill that can make a BIG difference in a child’s independence at school. ✨

Try this simple pre-zipping activity using something you probably already have at home: a bread clip! It gives your child a chance to practice the pinch, pull, and slide motion before transferring those skills to a real zipper.

These little practice moments can help build fine-motor coordination, hand strength, and motor planning for everyday dressing tasks.
