For thirty years, the National Alliance for Caregiving has studied what caregiving costs. Caregiving asks for more than time. It asks for pieces of a person's health, sleep, and peace of mind, and that toll is too often overlooked.

On World Mental Health Day, we're naming what too many caregivers carry in silence: what this role actually does to their mental health.

Research from NAC and NAMI, drawing on Caregiving in the US 2025, shows just how much weight caregivers are carrying:

➡️ A double burden. Caregivers who felt they had no choice in taking on the role reported 8.0 poor mental health days a month, compared to 4.5 days for those who chose it.
➡️ Isolation isn't felt equally. 32% of LGBTQ+ caregivers report feeling alone in their role, compared to 23% of non-LGBTQ+ caregivers.

Thirty years of data have made one thing clear: caregivers shouldn't have to carry this weight alone. It's time the support caught up to the sacrifice.

Don't just read the data. Act on it, share, and demand better for the caregivers around you.
