Social language skills can be described as the way in which we communicate verbally and non-verbally with the world around us. These skills are important because they form the basis of all human interaction and the foundation on which caring relationships are built.

Did you know that talking during “routine time” is the most beneficial for language development? Talking to your child during bath time, bedtime, meal time, and play time will encourage strong speech and language development. Just like adults, children feel more confident and secure when their daily activities are predictable and familiar.

ROUTINES are the perfect time to talk to your child.

DESCRIBE what you are doing.

REPEAT the same words over and over again.

If you are in the bath, use the words: water, hot, cold, in, out. If you add eating a meal, use the words: food, hot, more, yummy, big, small.

When you repeat words each day, your child will remember them and add them to their lexicon of words. Repetition is key for routine. Not only will it make your child feel safe, it will help them expand their language skills.

MODEL and DESCRIBE what you are doing, and your child will be able to repeat and remember.

Children learn the most when they are playing. They develop imagination, social skills, and creativity. As you can seem in these photos, there are many different states of play. Each stage impacts development differently!
………
Stages of play:
1. solitary play: a child playing with blocks alone in a corner.

2. parallel play: two or more children playing with blocks near each other but not talking with each other.
Stages of play include:

3. associative play: two or more children playing with blocks building the same thing, talking with each other but not working together to create something.

4. cooperative play: two or more children are playing with blocks building the same thing, talking with each other and working together to create something.
