There was no doubt about it. The person to receive Northern Community Mediation's Advocate of the Year Award had to be none other than Denise Drake: board member, mediator, and chairperson of the FUNding Committee. With Denise at the helm, fun was had by all. Even the tedious meetings and the demanding attention to detail required to pull off our more than successful Oscar After Party was accepted and enjoyed by everyone involved because Denise made certain that fun was had by all.

The recipient of Northern Community Mediation's 2025 Veteran Mediator of the Year Award was Mark Muniak. Upon retiring from Charlevoix County, Mark joined the Northern Community Mediation team as a volunteer mediator. Even in the hardest, most challenging of times, Mark has always been reliable. He is the person that the case managers can call upon when they are in a pinch.

Receiving the 2025 Rookie Mediator of the Year Award at Northern Community Mediation's Annual appreciation Gala was Kathy Krecke. Being a rookie does not imply that the person is still in the learning stages, it merely means it is someone who has been with the organization less than two years and enthusiastically accepts opportunities to mediate and goes out of his/her way to be a super-duper mediator. Kathy more than met the criteria.

No award could be more deserving than Jenny Brower's having received the Leah Award from Northern Community Mediation (NCM). Although the Appreciation Gala is held on a yearly basis, this prestigious award is not given out every year. It is only when an individual rises so far above the norm in giving of time, experience, dedication and knowledge over the years that this recognition is presented. Jenny Brower is truly a champion for NCM>

Denise Drake is an exemplary advocate for Northern Community Mediation (NCM). She is a volunteer mediator who always seems to be available, serves on the Board of Directors, and chairs the FUNdraising committee. It was her leadership that saw NCM host a highly successful Oscar after Party, a unique fundraiser held at the Odawa Casino. NCM would be lost without Denise.

At its Annual Appreciation Party, Northern Community Mediation (NCM) gets to draw attention to specific individuals who rise above and beyond in their dedication to NCM. Mark Muniak is more than deserving of that recognition. As an attorney for Charlevoix County, Mark supported the concept of mediation, and in 2019 became a mediator himself. Upon his retirement, he became even more involved with NCM. It was an easy decision to recognize Mark as NCM's Veteran Mediator of the Year.

On Tuesday, June 16, Northern Community Mediation (NCM) held its annual appreciation Party. According to Executive Director dr. Jane Millar, "What is so special about this event is that it gives us an opportunity to say thank you to all of the volunteers who give generously of their time." One of the annual awards is the Rookie Mediator of the Year. This is a person who may or may not be new to mediation, but who has joined the NCM team within the past two years. This year's recipient was Kathy Krecke, and what a mediator she is.

Being a farmer can be stressful enough. But, having to work on your farm while going through a divorce or a domestic dispute can be an extremely stressful and emotional experience. But there’s an option to help you to try to make the process much less difficult and less expensive.

“Divorce is a very common mediation, and we encourage it because it’s much less adversarial and much less stressful,” says Dr. Jane Millar, Executive Director of Northern Community Mediation based in Petoskey. It is also part of the Michigan Community Mediation Association.

Call NCM at 231.487.1771 for more information.

She says mediation is a much more streamlined process than going through the court system.
