The Diabetes Center for Children (DCC) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is dedicated to excellence in patient care, education and research. More than 2,000 children with diabetes are regular patients of the Diabetes Center, making us one of the largest centers in the country dedicated to the treatment and study of diabetes in children. Quick facts about the Diabetes Center for Children a

t CHOP

A pediatric center is specially equipped for children and includes machines calibrated for children of all sizes and staff who are comfortable helping families to meet their needs. The team at the DCC is familiar with the latest equipment to manage diabetes, and can help your family to get the equipment that will be best for your child, for example blood glucose meters and insulin syringes that have been developed with the needs of children taken into consideration. The DCC is committed to researching and using the latest technology available to manage diabetes. We have a large insulin pump program, a program to provide patients with CGMS, and the capability to download some blood glucose meters in our clinic setting. A team of physicians and scientists is working on solving diabetes research questions at a basic bench science level. Our clinical team participates in many national studies, and also does research with our own group of patients. Some things that we are involved in include a diabetes genetics consortium that provides researchers with information from families with multiple members with diabetes, a diabetes prediction study with family members of someone who has diabetes, different pharmaceutical trials and resilience, coping and adjustment studies. Our patient education program is evolving all of the time as we seek ways to serve families better. Education is not only provided in the inpatient setting, but is available through the family learning center here at CHOP, through CHOP homecare and in the outpatient clinical setting. We have structured education programs for families as well as many brochures and education materials. The team members of the DCC are very active in the Philadelphia area with diabetes camp, participation in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the American Diabetes Association as well as various local venues for diabetes education and raising awareness in the community.

We think this should be a national holiday too!

On July 27th, 1921: Dr Fredrick Banting and Charles Best isolated insulin for the first time at the University of Toronto! Diabetes has come a long way in 105 years (+ 2 days)! Thank you for sharing this Beyond Type 1! 💙💉

In my opinion, this is a national holiday 🥹💉

On Saturday, the Diabetes Center at CHOP had an AMAZING experience at the Philadelphia Union ⚽️ game (one of the opposing team players from Seattle, Jordan Morris, has T1D - so inspiring to see a Major League Soccer player with diabetes succeed)! Some of our patients, families and staff got to even go on the field for the pre-game banner reveal!

Thank you to Little Smiles Philadelphia for helping to sponsor this event! 🥳

CHOP was founded in 1855 as the nation’s first children’s hospital. As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday today, we’re also looking back at the many milestones we’ve achieved at CHOP over the past 171 years – and celebrating all of the patients, families, employees and supporters who have been part of our story.
