What started as “I’ll just try it” turned into a national stage.

Mercy’s journey into adaptive climbing began at Central Rock Gym, where she was often the only amputee on the wall. At first, some routes didn’t feel built for her.

But she kept climbing.

After joining an adaptive climbing group through Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center, everything changed. She found community. She found confidence. And she found what was possible.

Less than a year later, Mercy stood at the 2026 USA Climbing Para Climbing National Championships—competing against some of the best athletes in the country.

Not because it was easy.
But because she showed up anyway.

With the support of her care team and the Challenged Champions Fund, Mercy received a specialized climbing prosthesis that allowed her to move with greater precision and confidence on the wall.

And that made all the difference.

Her story isn’t about perfect climbs or podium finishes.
It’s about courage, growth, and redefining what success looks like.

Because sometimes, the biggest win is simply this:

Showing up.

Strong partnerships lead to stronger patient outcomes.

Recently, the team at Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center had the opportunity to connect with the therapy team at St. Joseph’s Health for an in-service focused on improving the continuum of care for individuals facing limb loss.

With approximately 25 physical and occupational therapists and several vascular physician assistants in attendance, the conversation centered around one key idea: care starts before surgery and continues well beyond it.

By collaborating early, patients benefit from better protection of the residual limb, smoother recovery timelines, and greater confidence as they transition from hospital to home. St. Joseph’s Health emphasizes comprehensive rehabilitation and individualized care to help patients regain independence and improve quality of life —and partnerships like this help make that possible.

We’re grateful to share knowledge, strengthen relationships, and continue building a more connected, patient-centered approach to care in our community.

Because better communication leads to better outcomes.
