A gardener knows that growth cannot be forced. Pulling on a stem will not make it taller. Asking a seedling to withstand wind before its roots have taken hold will not make it stronger. Growth depends on conditions. Light, water, temperature, nourishment, and time each have their role, and when one is missing, the plant struggles no matter how much it “tries.” This is why nursery greenhouses exist. They create an environment where young plants can become established during a vulnerable stage of development. By carefully cultivating the surroundings that sustain life, a greenhouse gives young plants the opportunity to become rooted before entering the larger ecosystem in which they will continue to grow.

Recovery from an eating disorder follows a similar rhythm. Read more on our blog.

There is a significant gap between what an eating disorder actually is and what many people have been taught to recognize. Public perception, media portrayals, and even healthcare systems have long reinforced the idea that eating disorders are defined by visible thinness, leading many people to believe that body size determines whether someone is “sick enough” to need help. In reality, eating disorders are complex mental illnesses that affect people across the weight spectrum, and some individuals experience profound psychological and medical consequences with little or no visible change in body size. Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses that affect people across the weight spectrum, but can you have an eating disorder without being underweight?

Many people think of hunger cues as a simple feeling in the stomach that tells us when to eat and when to stop. In reality, our relationship with hunger is far more complex. Hunger and fullness are part of an intricate communication system between the brain and body, one that can become disrupted for many reasons. While this conversation often centers on restrictive eating disorders, the same disruption frequently plays a role in compulsive eating and binge eating, where internal signals may become difficult to recognize, trust, or respond to consistently. Awareness of hunger and fullness is part of an ongoing conversation between the brain and body. Eating disorders can disrupt it. Let's look at how to get hunger cues back

Eating disorders don’t always appear dramatic or obvious. Many people experience subtle, normalized behaviors that quietly restrict flexibility, increase anxiety around food, and weaken trust in hunger cues. These disordered food rules can exist even if weight seems stable or eating looks “normal” from the outside. Read more on our blog.

Eating disorders are not all the same. There are apparent and subtle signs of an eating disorder. If you have food rules like these, you may have a problem with food.

When you’re living with an eating disorder, choosing a level of care is rarely a simple decision. Leaving home for residential treatment can feel intimidating, disruptive, and even frightening. At the same time, staying home with virtual care may feel safer, more convenient, or more practical. For many people, the choice brings up questions about whether they are “sick enough” for residential treatment or whether they should be able to manage recovery with less intensive support. Read more on our blog.

This guide is designed to help you understand the differences between residential and virtual eating disorder treatment and which may be right for you.
