From class this morning…

There have been times in my life when I have felt so compelled to change that I almost felt claustrophobic until I could shed that skin. I’ve been fortunate (at times I didn’t feel so fortunate) to have been presented with big choices in my life but those types of cataclysmic shifts are rare. I believe the Universe is handing you the risk for a reason.

But the real knowing of Self comes in the subtle shifts, subtle blooms, that wash over you because you allow them to and maybe even learn to welcome them. As women, we hold ourselves to a different standard as much as we are held to a different one and we lose sight of who we are and one day we wake up and say, “What the hell happened to me” and we get a divorce and we dye our hair and we change jobs and we do all the things until, if we are lucky, we land in a yoga class that actually teaches yoga not just pretty stretching and we realize we haven’t fully exhaled for years and we actually begin to feel the mat beneath us and we listen, finally listen, to the voice inside that has been saying “I’m right here” and we remember the pearl necklace has been around our neck all along and we begin that journey of the self through the self to the self. If we are lucky.

Dedicated to Susan’s beautiful daughter on her 40th birthday. It is, indeed, an auspicious time for a woman. And dedicated to Women. Brave women who don’t move the way fear makes you move but move the way love makes you move. We will be ones to save us.

From class this morning…
Reminiscent of the knowing to listen to your body’s whisper before it becomes a scream. But more than that. I’ve long thought your heart and your mind are filters, charged with illusion. Your intuition, your clear signal, comes from your gut. Remember, 90-95% of your serotonin is produced in your gi tract. We practice yoga to learn and refine the art of listening beyond just hearing.

However cliché it is, however many times it takes, remind yourself to find your joy. Nurture it. Believe in it. Hold on to it.

The ego gets in the way. It shifts you from Observer to Judge, a seat for no one, really.

Yoga helps you learn your shifts, learn to shift.

Rumi said “Run from what’s comfortable. Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious. I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now on I’ll be mad.”

How do you keep yourself free?

Happy Solstice from class this morning…

The Summer Solstice, the longest day, the most luminous point, asks you to stand still and look around and look inside and see—really see—the abundance around and within you. What is good right now? Not what is next but what, in this moment, can you honor and be present for? Stand still in the sun and bask in its (your) warmth and light.

From class this morning…

I’ve always been curious about how we feel nostalgia—it’s long been something I contemplate and hope to one day better understand. Feeling those pangs of longing for a different version of the world, of me, of others. Time, a chance you missed, a risk you didn’t take, a love you couldn’t utter. The intensity of feeling something slipping through your hands is profound, often painful. It doesn’t matter how well adjusted you think you are, really.

Do you ever try to be someone you thought you were? Do you ever wish for another version of you? Do we all, if we are really being honest with ourselves?

Bradbury’s words bring me back to what I have learned from my years practicing yoga—there really is only this moment. Anything more or less is an illusion.

The physical practice of yoga isn’t really yoga. It is a door that opens to a path you can choose to walk that leads you back to yourself. Right here. Right now.

As Yeats said, “The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” Indeed. You happen to be one of those magic things.

From class this week.
We talked about searching and realizing it’s already in your grasp because it’s inside you but you still have to find it. We talked about some of my favorite advice that I was ever given decades ago (the same advice I have passed down to so many)—when in doubt, do nothing and allow the natural course of events to happen. And we talked about Newton’s First Law of Motion and that you don’t need to go from laying in bed to hiking Mt Everest. You make the small shift of putting your feet on the floor.

From class this morning.

It’s not really a choice between surrendering or resisting. That’s a Hobson’s choice—an illusion of choice that actually leads to the same outcome. Suffering.
Yoga speaks a lot about surrender but the world around our mats speaks a lot about resistance. Surrender isn’t weak and resistance isn’t strong. You need both. In your bodies and in your minds and in your hearts. ✌🏻
