HOSPICE MYTHS vs. FACTS
There are many misconceptions about Hospice care and these misconceptions can sometimes prevent patients and families from receiving the care, comfort, guidance, and support they deserve. Let’s clear up a few common myths and share what Hospice is really about.
MYTH #1: Hospice means giving up.
FACT: Hospice isn’t about giving up hope, it’s about shifting the focus to comfort, dignity, and quality of life. It allows patients to focus on what matters most while receiving compassionate care and support throughout their journey.
MYTH #2: Hospice care is only provided in a Hospice facility.
FACT: Hospice care can be provided wherever a patient calls home, including a private residence, Assisted Living Community, or Skilled Nursing Facility. Care comes to the patient, meeting them where they are most comfortable.
MYTH #3: Hospice is only for the patient.
FACT: Hospice supports the entire family. In addition to caring for the patient, services may include emotional support, caregiver education, spiritual care, social work, and bereavement support for loved ones.
MYTH #4: Choosing Hospice means losing control over your care.
FACT: Hospice care is centered on the patient’s wishes, values, and personal goals. Patients and families are active participants in developing a plan of care that honors their preferences and prioritizes what matters most to them.
