Creating the kind of chess spaces we’d love to see more of with ♟️💛

Friendly blitz. Coffeehouse atmosphere. Fast games, fun chaos, and good company ☕♟️

A welcoming space for women and girls to meet, play, connect, and simply enjoy chess together.

Chess festival. ♟️✨

This weekend felt absolutely surreal.

More than 400 chess players a day, over 4 days, in the middle of a shopping center. Rapid, blitz, strong international players, kids, amateurs, titled players, spectators, and casual weekend shoppers unexpectedly walking into the chess universe.

A beautiful kind of chess chaos 😄

One round you might face a grandmaster, the next a talented young player. Everything moves fast, and emotions are part of the experience.

While this kind of atmosphere is not exactly my ideal chess habitat (a bit too loud and energetic for my personal taste 😄), I genuinely love the idea behind it: bringing chess into public space, making it visible, accessible, and allowing people to feel part of the chess world, whether they are playing or simply watching.

For me, the biggest highlight was the human side.

✨ Finally meeting my childhood idol from Bulgaria, Antoaneta Stefanova (Women’s World Champion 2004–2006)

✨ An arbiter with excellent timing and humor in our group photo 😄

✨ Connecting with the Austrian women’s chess community, blending in with the younger generation, and sharing games, laughter, focus, and emotions together

For me, this was a real chess festival.

And yes… Eurovision weekend too 😄🇧🇬
Happy victory to all Bulgarians 💚🤍

Austrian Youth Chess Championships U16 & U18 ♟️

Team Vienna delivered a very strong performance:
2 titles, 1 silver, 2 bronze medals, and 3 additional qualifications for the World Championships.
(2 of 4 titles, 5 of 12 medals, and 8 of 20 qualification spots – the remaining 8 federal states shared the rest.)

I am very proud of the outstanding chess performance.
But I am even more proud of the leadership and team spirit demonstrated off the board – a friendly, respectful, and supportive atmosphere throughout the tournament.

It was a pleasure to witness how Vienna’s top youth players (from different clubs) encouraged each other, included our youngest participants, and remained fair even when facing each other the very next day.

And still – they had fun. After all, it was the Easter holidays.

It’s truly beautiful to see how much adolescents gain from chess:
the ability to sustain concentration over long periods of time, reflect on their own mistakes, prepare, improve, work hard, and take responsibility.

Not everyone wins in chess.
But everyone wins from chess.

What I like most about chess? Sitting down. :D

While many people today work in offices and need the gym after work as compensation, I’m one of those people who teaches what feels like thousands of movement classes per week (at least that’s how it feels sometimes :D). So my hobby allows me to sit.

Still, anyone who has seen me play a standard slow chess game knows: I don’t actually sit that patiently. I genuinely admire 10-year-olds who can already stay calmer at the board than I do.

That’s probably why I don’t work in an office.

Sometimes I wonder what my patience level would be if I hadn’t been practicing meditation for the past 20 years.

When you teach multiple modalities, people love to put you in one neat little box.
“Oh she’s the yoga one.”
“Oh she’s the Zumba one.”

On the surface they feel like total opposites. One’s a sweaty dance party, the other’s a slow, stretchy exhale.

But underneath?

Here’s what Zumba and yoga secretly share:

1. They’re both embodied movement practices

• In Zumba, you connect through rhythm and coordination.
• In yoga, you connect through breath and alignment.

2. They regulate your nervous system

• Zumba discharges stress through high-energy movement and music, like shaking the static out of your system.
• Yoga down-regulates stress through breathwork and slower holds.

3. They improve body awareness

Both build proprioception, that quiet intelligence of the body.
Balance. Coordination. Spatial awareness.

4. They boost mood

• Zumba = endorphins + music + group energy → joy spike.
• Yoga = deep breathing + parasympathetic activation → calm clarity.

5. They can both be meditative

Movement can be meditation.
Stillness can be meditation.
Rhythm can be meditation.

When you’re fully in a Zumba routine and the choreography flows? That’s flow state.
When you’re holding a pose and breathing steadily? Also flow state.

6. They build confidence

Mastering a choreography or finally balancing in Dancer Pose both give you that quiet
“I can do hard things” feeling.

Zumba = expression, fire, release, rhythm.
Yoga = integration, grounding, breath, awareness.

While we still on it…

I juggle between several active social roles every week. Sometimes I switch between them on a daily basis.

has helped me express the majority if them in a cute pic.

Teacher, mentor, chess trainer, back health coach and even more … need an album

Don’t forget Zumba and Yoga :D

Another semester wrapped up - and wow, what a ride 🌹💪
So grateful for my five incredible groups in the „Beweg dich – Gesunder Rücken“ courses (ÖGK in cooperation with VHS). The feedback was heartwarming:
„I never thought I’d actually enjoy movement classes!“
„These sessions were the highlight of my week.“
„My back pain got better and I finally understand my body.“
„I have way more awareness now when I move.“
That’s exactly why I do this: teaching functional, healthy movement you can use every day. Building body awareness. Explaining why we do certain exercises. Coaching people so they can train confidently and independently at home or in the gym.
I’m truly overwhelmed by all the beautiful gestures, flowers, little surprises and kind words you gave me - so many thoughtful things from so many of you. Each one felt like a big warm hug saying „thank you for being there“. You have no idea how much that means to me 🥹❤️
New groups are starting soon - registration is already open via the ÖGK website:
https://www.gesundheitskasse.at/vema/?contentid=10007.892883&portal=oegkportal&publishArea=rueckenss26
Due to my other projects and commitments, I’m only coaching three „Beweg dich – Gesunder Rücken“ courses this summer semester - Tuesdays & Thursdays at VHS Favoriten. Spots are limited and many are already booked - as usual 😏
The courses are 100% free (covered by ÖGK), open to everyone 18+ with mild back issues or risk factors (long sitting, stress, lack of movement…). No referral needed. Participation possible once every two years.
