Congratulations to Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Rob Baird and the entire theatre team, as we celebrated the exciting milestone of the very first VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution cases undertaken here at Calvary North Adelaide!

This new technology will be utilised for many of our joint replacement surgeries going forward, as it offers surgeons real-time data and precision. For patients it means fewer appointments, along with quick overall recovery times.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the successful installation and integration of this new equipment!

A world first here at Calvary North Adelaide, with Drs Ailsa Wilson Edwards and Ashani Couchman, offering fresh hope for people with overactive bladder and faecal incontinence.

Led by Dr Wilson Edwards in SA, the Aquarius Pilot Study aims to evaluate an external system for patients undergoing sacral neuromodulation (altering nerve activity) to address overactive bladder or faecal incontinence.

"The purpose of the study is to test an innovative stimulator plus a waterproof dressing, worn on the lower back, that allows the patient to shower and get wet, while they find out if this therapy works for them.” Dr Wilson Edwards said.

“Usually during the testing period we require there be at least one week of no showering, to avoid water exposure to the device. This study is about providing a product that can withstand daily life. Being able to shower and get on with life is so important for people with bladder and bowel problems. If we can solve this step to improve the patient’s experience many more people can benefit from the science behind sacral neuromodulation.”

The first study patient in the world underwent their procedure here with Dr Ashani Couchman recently, and together Drs Couchman and Wilson Edwards have now completed the first 10 participants in the world through this international study.

This week, nursing staff from our St. Helen's ward and Kimberley House came together with Calvary Connery Centre staff for an engaging and informative haematology/oncology education evening, focused on advancing knowledge and improving patient care.

We were fortunate to learn from expert speakers: Dr Wei Yang Ng (Haematologist), Amanda Maple (Cancer Council Nurse lead), Sigourney Reschke (Counselling Manager), and Jo Goodwin (Life blood Australia Transfusion Nurse Consultant)
The evening explored the evolving role of nurses in caring for patients receiving CAR T-cell therapy (an evolving treatment for B- cell malignancies and myeloma), including monitoring toxicities, managing adverse events, and ensuring timely escalation of care.

We know our patients will see the benefit of this strong collaboration across services, as the positive feedback received reflects the value of education, connection, and shared learning with our staff.

Happy Cancer Nurses Day!

Celebrating the expertise, compassion and impact that these nurses have on the lives of those they care for.

Patient Joe noted: "I've been coming here for about 18 months, and I've got to know some of the nurse quite well. They keep me informed, and that helps me feel comfortable and relaxed. Everyone here has been really good, and when I was in the ward previously, they were all excellent there too. All the nurses have so much knowledge and experience, and I am lucky to have them caring for me."

Teams from Kimberly House and St Helen's stopped for morning tea today, and to celebrate and acknowledge those who go above and beyond in their roles.
This year, certificates of recognition were awarded to Gysia from Kimberly House and Declan from St Helen's ward.

Celebrating Saint Mary Mackillop of the Cross today, sharing the beautiful artwork from St Monica's Parish School, Walkerville which adorns our level 1 corridor.

St Mary Mackillop is very special to St Monica's as they are a Josephite school (the order that St Mary Mackillop started in 1866 ). They continue to work to instil her values of love, respect, gratitude and faith in daily practises at the school.

The artwork is in an outback setting during a sunset, which shows Mary Mackillop's desire to educate children in the country, and it is where she opened her first school in Penola.

A big thank you to Sophie, who spent her school holidays crocheting these sweet plushies to donate to the hospital.

We are sure these little guys will bring smiles to the faces of those lucky enough to receive one. What a lovely gesture!
