🌱 “How do I choose a psychologist?” The honest answer: fit matters more than almost anything else.

Decades of research point the same way. The strongest predictor of therapy working isn’t the specific modality, it’s the relationship between you and your psychologist. Feeling safe enough to be honest, and understood when you are.

That’s why it’s worth asking questions before you commit: What’s your experience with what I’m dealing with? How do you usually work? And if therapy didn’t work for you in the past, a poor fit may have been the reason, not you.

Our free 15 minute call with our Care Coordinator exists exactly for this: understanding what you need and matching you with the right clinician. https://mylifepsychologists.com.au

🌱 Nobody warns you that a career change can feel like losing a person: the version of yourself that made sense.

We talk about career change practically, the money, the retraining, the risk. What actually catches people off guard is the grief. When “what do you do?” has had the same answer for years, letting it go is disorienting, even when the change was your own choice.

If you’re feeling unmoored in the middle of one, that’s not evidence you chose wrong. It’s what identity change feels like from the inside, and it’s a genuinely useful thing to bring to therapy.

🌱 “Why does my partner shut down every time I try to talk about us?”

If this is your relationship, you’re likely in what psychologists call the pursuer-withdrawer dynamic. One partner raises things, chases resolution, needs it sorted tonight. The other goes quiet, asks for space, shuts the conversation down. Each person’s coping makes the other’s worse.

The part that changes everything: both moves are usually protective. Pursuing is a bid for connection. Withdrawing is an attempt not to make things worse. Neither partner is the villain; the pattern is the problem, and patterns respond well to couples therapy.

🌱 “Am I burnt out, or is this depression?” It’s one of the most common questions we hear, and from the inside the two can feel identical.

The clearest difference is what happens when the pressure stops. Burnout usually tracks a source: step away from it, even briefly, and something lifts. Depression follows you into the weekend and the holiday, and the flatness spreads into parts of life that have nothing to do with work.

They can overlap too, which is why guessing isn’t a great strategy. A proper assessment takes the guesswork out of it.

🌱 Something most people don’t know to ask when choosing a psychologist: who’s behind them?

At MyLife, every psychologist works as part of a team. They meet regularly to reflect on their clinical work, share perspectives on complex situations, and keep each other sharp. Your sessions stay completely private, and the thinking behind your care is never one person working in isolation.

It’s one of the quiet things that shapes the quality of what happens in the room.

🌱 How do you know when it’s time to talk to someone? Probably earlier than you think.

Most people wait until things get loud: panic, crisis, breaking point. But the quieter signs are usually enough. It’s been on your mind for months. You keep telling yourself you should be able to handle it on your own. And handling it is costing you more than it used to.

You don’t need to earn therapy by getting worse first. Reaching out early makes the work easier, not less legitimate.

🌱 You can have a full calendar, a full inbox, a full house, and still feel deeply lonely.

Loneliness isn’t about how many people are around you. It’s about whether you feel genuinely known by any of them. That’s why it can sit quietly inside busy, successful, well-connected lives, often alongside a sense of shame that makes it hard to name.

If that feels familiar, you’re not failing at anything. And it’s something therapy is genuinely good at helping with.

🌱 Some of the most anxious people we meet are the ones holding everything together.

They make every deadline, every school pickup, every family dinner. What nobody sees is the triple-checking, the 3am rehearsing of tomorrow, the feeling of never quite being able to switch off.

Anxiety that keeps you over-functioning is still anxiety, and it responds well to treatment. You don’t need to be in crisis for it to be worth addressing.

🌱 Not what most people picture when they hear “psychology clinic”.

One of the most common things we hear from new clients is that they put off reaching out for years, partly because of what they imagined therapy would feel like. Cold room, hard chairs, a stranger behind a desk.

So here’s a look at the space our clients actually walk into in Alexandria. Calm, private, and designed for real conversations.

Waiting until things are unbearable isn’t a sign of commitment, it’s often just what happens when reaching out feels harder than pushing through. Couples therapy works best as a proactive step, not a last resort.
