City Fertility lab Gregory Hills

IVF Timelapse video of an embryo developing over 5 days condensed to 1 minute.
Narrated by embryologist Natalie at City Fertility Gregory Hills.
Machine is the Chronos Timelapse Incubator- nicknamed Louise Brown ( the worlds first IVF baby)
I have always loved watching the lab and what goes on in there is simply ( complexity) astonishing, watching the beginning of life 🤔
The early embryo from fertilisation knows exactly what to do, and we facilitate this.
From a single s***m and egg it becomes a 200-300 cell day 5 blastocyst ( meaning it has blastulated, filled with fluid) with the inner cell mass becoming the baby and the outer shell the membranes and placenta.
Then it hatches out of the shell called the zona pellucida and attaches to the uterine endometrial wall.

Lovely to be part of springettsarcade centenary celebration last night!
This much-loved arcade is a Bowral landmark, home to a range of retail stores and professional services.
I’m there Tuesdays and Thursdays; Gregory Hills the other days.
I’m upstairs in the professional suites (Suite B), focusing on infertility and some gynaecology.
Loving being part of the Bowral and Southern Highlands NSW community!

Meeting my granddaughter Violet and mum Siobhan over the weekend in Melbourne. I’m officially Poppa Greening ( as was my dad and his).
Violet is an IVF baby like 1:16 births in Australia 🇦🇺 and Siobhan has more frozen eggs as she has a diminished ovarian reserve we call DOR. Her and her husband were lucky 🍀 to get just one embryo that worked ( as I often say most of us natural pregnancies are one egg and embryo wonders!)
Violet is wonderful and it’s true that the feelings one has for your grandchild, a lot like a new parent but different.
I was there throughout their infertility journey as Dr David Wilkinson did the medical 🏥 work. And City Fertility Melbourne the IVF. And it was a huge relief when that single and only embryo stuck ( phew 😅)
And I look forward to watching the new parents negotiate parenthood, watching Violent grow up and being part of her life. I really do!
I love my job, and got to experience it as my daughter went through it as infertility has no reservations who it affects.
Welcome to our wonderful world 🌍 Violet and to all new parent/s I say the same.

Another IVF pregnancy 🤰 8+1 weeks
Foetal heart rate 174 CRL - crown rump length 17.20mm. It’s amazing to see that small embryo grow into this small foetus.
You can see the cord, the head and just see the thin membrane that is the gestational sac.
1 in 16 births in ( 6.25%) are from IVF and we value every single one. Just like this one.
We facilitate but nature really is the star as we copy it.
I always love the hope and joy this ultrasound scan brings.

I have lots of roles and one is teaching the next generation of medical 🏥 students. It’s a privilege to do it but more so give back as I was taught many ( many ) years ago. I remember many of my teachers fondly and they made me the doctor I am now.
There’s a lot to learn medically, a lot emotionally and socially. Just a lot about life as a doctor and especially to be a good one. My dad said if your going to be a doctor ( and 3 of his kids got into medical school) “be a good one” the patients deserve to see a good one.
If you have any advice about doctors for Marianne et al please post. It always helps to see things through the patients eyes 👀 one of the points I teach. Swap roles, look back at yourself, what do you want to see in a doctor.
Be a good doctor for a career then pass the baton on to the Marianne’s generation.

Here in Dunedin, in New Zealand, for my 40th medical school reunion at the University of Otago. So wonderful to catch up with my cohort and hear what they’ve been up to in the medical world and beyond. It’s hard to believe it’s been four decades since I graduated. How time flies!

25 years ago I witnessed this as a doctor working at the Hammersmith IVF unit in London UK 🇬🇧 I remember it vividly like many do.
I was on the phone 📞 to a patient’s husband and he paused….” Can I get back to you? Our New York office has suddenly gone off line ) he worked at KPMG I think it was) and we’re trying to sort this out” Sure I said and hung up. Then I was called to our huge waiting room full of staff and patients as 9/11 was happening live in NY! 😱 OMG it was horrific and no one knew what was happening initially or why. Then the second plane ✈️ flew into tower 2 suddenly and the pentagon was attacked, and terrorism was clear.
A TV reporter mentioned what companies were in the towers above the plane strikes and said KPMG as I recall, my phone patients company, and I got goosebumps. I remember that so clearly.
London believed they could be attacked next and shut down everything. But years of IRA attacks meant they had experienced attacks before and they handled it well and relatively calmly.
25 years later history teaches us a lot about that day we all remember. And me and my family visited the site on our way back to Australia 🇦🇺 it was incredibly sad as huge queues patiently waited and walked slowly by the memorial.
I always prefer posting positive good news 📰 stories but history is replete with these violent negative ones we will always remember. The trick is to learn from them, something we are not always good at.

I did something different yesterday, an ART class! Nope, no Assisted Reproductive Technology ( my day job) just simple art 🖼️ for arts sake 😁
Waterbrook Bowral put on a class by local artist Kirsten Deakin which she invited me to as it was a Saturday. My last one was probably high school!
What a lot of fun it was. Utterly relaxing and my cup now sits at home to remind me of the class.
The more studies I read about looking after one’s mind and emotions the more I realise it’s times like these that offer the best therapy in a hectic world 🗺️ determined to get us on our phones 📱and IT.
Activate some different brain 🧠 neurons and do a craft, read a book 📕, do some gardening 👩‍🌾 or even take a walk in nature. If there’s something that activates your neurons and releases lots of serotonin feel free to comment on it.
