So much of what holds us back is the story we tell ourselves about who we are. The mistakes we have made. The labels others have given us. The version of ourselves we became when life got hard.

But identity is not fixed. It is built. Rebuilt. Chosen.

You are not your past.

Our Women's Group in Warrnambool took on ten pin bowling last week. Who knew there were so many hidden bowling champions in the group? 🎳

From gutter balls to strikes, it was a morning of laughs, friendly competition and good company. Every moment was a reminder how important community and connection are!

This week Women's Group visited our neighbours at The Scent Lab on Little Fyans Street.

The group had the chance to meet Adam, the founder of Scent Lab, and hear a little of his story. Adam didn't have the easiest start in life, but rather than letting that define him, he turned his efforts into a thriving business offering a range of affordable treats and gifts, all made with care, and with his Mum by his side.

It was the perfect real life reflection of what Women's Group has been exploring this week - identity. The way we see ourselves shapes everything. Our decisions, our self-worth, our direction.

Adam's story is a reminder that when we stop letting the harder parts of our story define us and start building from the good, incredible things are possible.

We love connecting our participants with inspiring people right here in our own community 🩡

Why Art Therapy? 🎨

At PIYP, Art Therapy runs every Monday after lunch and there is a reason we have made it a cornerstone of our weekly program.

Art Therapy is not about being a good artist. It is about expression, processing and connection. For people navigating addiction, trauma or mental health challenges, putting something on paper or canvas can unlock feelings that are difficult to put into words.

The benefits are well documented. Art Therapy helps to reduce stress and anxiety, build self-esteem and confidence, develop emotional awareness, process difficult experiences in a safe and supported way, and create a sense of achievement and purpose.

In the context of addiction recovery specifically, Art Therapy offers something particularly powerful. It provides a healthy and creative outlet for emotions that might otherwise be suppressed or expressed in harmful ways. It also helps to rebuild a sense of identity, something that addiction can quietly strip away over time.

Whether you consider yourself creative or not, we strongly encourage you to come along. You might be surprised by what it unlocks.

Art Therapy runs every Monday from 1:00pm at the PIYP centre. All participants are welcome!

Kerry, known as Kez, has been part of the Power In You Project community for three and a half years.

Before finding PIYP, Kez was attending Mind Works Geelong for support. When that service closed, she was connected to PIYP through the NDIS and it has been a constant in her life ever since.

These days, Kez is one of the most engaged members of the community. You will find her at her one on ones on Monday and Tuesday, Art Therapy on Monday, Wellbeing Group on Tuesday afternoon, Yoga and Women's Group on Wednesday, Fishing on Thursday when she can make it, and Community Connection on Friday. She shows up nearly every day and that says everything.

For Kez, navigating day to day life can be challenging with feelings of anxiety and paranoia that don't always quiet down. There are days that are harder than others. But at PIYP she has found something that makes those days more manageable. A team that cares and listens, and a community of people who look out for one another.

Her support worker Josh has been a steady presence throughout her journey, and the relationships she has built with fellow participants, including her close friendship with Kaz, have become just as important to her wellbeing.

Kez puts it simply. "The staff and the clients, we all help each other out. Caring is sharing. I don't know what I'd do without this place."

It has been a busy week in the PIYP kitchen πŸ”₯

On Friday, Karen and Kez got baking during Community Connection, whipping up a batch of delicious cookies for the centre. Then on Monday, we got to work preparing a full round of NDIS meals for the week ahead.

Cooking together, eating together, looking after each other. That is community 🩡

Week 7 and we are flying through the term!

This week in Addiction Support, we will be exploring stress and worry. These are emotions that everyone experiences in some form, and they can have a significant impact on our lives if left unaddressed.

By learning to recognise when we are stressed or worried, we can develop positive and practical ways of managing these feelings, limiting their hold on us and allowing us to live more freely.

Mental Health Group will be looking at boredom, isolation and gratification. These three themes have a powerful influence on our mental health, affecting how we feel about ourselves, how supported we are and how we pursue the things that matter to us. When we address these themes in a healthy way, the benefits to our mental wellbeing are significant.

Women's Group will be exploring identity. The way we see ourselves shapes our decisions, our self-worth and our priorities. When our identity becomes defined by the harder parts of our story, it can be difficult to move forward. But when we recognise the good in ourselves and begin to build from there, we create the foundations for greater self-worth and a life that reflects who we truly are.

Our Physical Wellbeing and Community Connection sessions are running throughout the week alongside our support groups. All are welcome to attend.

Last night Kane and Matt attended the Geelong Community Foundation Grant Gala at Norlane ARC, joining incredible organisations from across the region.

We are incredibly grateful for the continued trust and support of the Foundation. Receiving multi-year funding means we can keep doing what we do, working towards a Geelong that is safer, more inclusive and full of opportunity for everyone.

Thank you to the Geelong Community Foundation and to everyone in that room who is committed to making this region a better place 🩡
