If you do physically demanding work, you may be at greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries that can lead to back pain.

Repetitive tasks, heavy lifting, pushing, pulling and long hours on your feet can place ongoing strain on the spine, increasing the risk of injury and, over time, impacting both physical and mental wellbeing.

Join the Spinal Health Month Movement (1–30 June) and adjust your thinking, because a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.

What type of back pain are you experiencing?

Back pain isn’t one-size-fits-all. Understanding the type of pain you have is the first step toward managing it.

🤔 Non-specific low back pain
Around 8 in 10 cases fall into this category, where there’s no single identifiable cause. Often linked to muscles, joints or everyday strain.

⚡ Acute back pain
Short-term pain that can come on suddenly, often from lifting, movement or minor injury.

⏳ Chronic back pain
Pain that persists for 12 weeks or more, sometimes continuing even after the initial cause has resolved.

➡️ Referred or radiating pain
Pain that travels, such as down the leg, often linked to nerve involvement.

🧠 Back pain doesn’t just affect the body - it can also impact mental wellbeing, contributing to stress, fatigue and reduced quality of life.

Understanding your pain is the first step to getting back to feeling good.

Spinal Health Month (1–30 June) is a national initiative highlighting the growing impact of back pain on both physical and mental health.

With over 6.1 million Australians affected by musculoskeletal disorders, and back pain a leading cause of disability, the need for prevention and early intervention has never been greater.

Back pain doesn’t just affect mobility - it can also contribute to stress, fatigue and reduced quality of life, creating a cycle that impacts mental wellbeing.

Adjust your thinking this June and join the Spinal Health Movement.

❓How do we treat NSLBP? ❓

Evidence shows the best way to deal with NSLBP is with a combination of conservative care (such as seeing your chiropractor) and core exercises which are tailored to the individual. Your program should be developed in a team approach by both your chiropractor AND you to ensure the exercises are the right fit.

🏋 What are core exercises? 🏋

Core stability involves using the core muscles to stabilise the lumbar spine and pelvic girdle during static postures and dynamic movements. This will look different for each individual. Sometimes they look like sit ups and planks, and sometimes they look like bird-dog and dead bug exercises.

✴ Non-Specific Low Back Pain ✴

Did you know?

❓ It is estimated that 70-90% of people will suffer from NSLBP at some point and is the most frequent musculoskeletal condition that presents to GPs in Australia.

❓ People with NSLBP often experience heightened pain sensitivity and their pain may be affected by stress, anxiety and/or depression.

✴ Non-Specific Low Back Pain ✴

🤷‍♀️ What is it?

It is defined as localised pain between the 12th costal margin (lowest border of the ribcage) and above the inferior gluteal folds (above the pelvis/hips) with or without leg pain which is not attributed to recognisable pathology.

❓ Did you know?

Non-specific low back pain can affect people of all ages and is a leading contributor to disease burden worldwide with 4 million Australians suffering from back problems.
