"I know it's over... so why does it still affect me?"
This is one of the most common questions we hear.

The truth is, trauma isn't just about what happened—it's about how our brain and nervous system stored the experience.
You can logically know you're safe today, yet your body still reacts as if the danger is happening now.

You might notice:
• Feeling on edge for no obvious reason.
• Avoiding certain people, places, or conversations.
• Becoming overwhelmed by situations others seem to manage easily.
• Feeling numb or disconnected.
• Reacting more intensely than you want to.
These aren't signs of weakness. They're often signs that your nervous system adapted to help you survive.
Sometimes trauma also shapes the beliefs we develop about ourselves and others. You may find yourself thinking, "I'm not good enough," "People will leave me," or "I have to do everything perfectly." These deeply held patterns, known in Schema Therapy as schemas, often develop early in life and can continue to influence our relationships, emotions, and decisions long after the original experiences have passed.
The encouraging news is that our brains—and our patterns—can change.
Trauma-informed therapies such as EMDR can help the brain process distressing memories so they become memories rather than ongoing threats. Schema Therapy helps identify and heal the long-standing beliefs and coping patterns that may have developed from those experiences, creating lasting emotional change.
Healing doesn't mean forgetting what happened.
It means the past no longer dictates your present.
If this resonates with you, know that support is available.

At Mind Over Matters, we see how many people — especially neurodivergent individuals and families — have spent years trying to force themselves into systems, expectations, and environments that never truly fit.
Then something shifts.
A new understanding.
A different lens.
A moment of self-acceptance.
A realisation that struggling doesn’t mean failing.
“Shift happens” isn’t about becoming someone else.
It’s about creating space to be more fully yourself.
We believe meaningful support begins with curiosity, safety, and understanding — not judgement or shame.
Because when people feel genuinely seen, supported, and understood, change becomes possible.

At Mind Over Matters, we’ve built things differently to the large, hard-to-navigate psychology services. Here’s how we differ:

• You won’t get lost in the system
No being passed around, no “good luck reaching your therapist.” We keep access human and responsive.

• Neuroaffirming, not one-size-fits-all.
We work with your brain, not against it.
ADHD, autism, this isn’t something we try to “fix.” We adapt therapy to actually suit how you function.

• Real-world understanding
Lived experience matters. We get that life is messy, complex, and doesn’t fit neatly into textbook models.

• No generic therapy
If sitting in a room talking doesn’t work for you, we change it.
Walk and talk, practical strategies, structured sessions, creative approaches, we meet you where you are.

• Safety first, always
We prioritise helping you feel safe enough to actually do the work. That might mean going slower, doing things differently, or reshaping the process entirely. Ensuring that wherever you’re at your not judged!

• A systems approach
Your life isn’t just what happens in a session. Work, relationships, stress, environment, we look at the whole picture, not just symptoms.

Because therapy should fit you, not the other way around.

Relationships shape almost every part of our lives—how we feel, how we cope, and how we connect with the people who matter most. Communication isn’t always easy.

You might notice:
• Conversations turning into arguments
• Feeling unheard or misunderstood
• Withdrawing or shutting down
• The same cycles/issues coming up again and again.

At Mind Over Matters, we support individuals and couples to build stronger, more effective communication using evidence-based approaches, including the work of John Gottman and Julie Gottman.

We can help you:
• Understand patterns in your relationship
• Reduce conflict and improve communication
• Rebuild trust and connection
• Learn practical tools you can use straight away
Whether you're in a relationship or navigating challenges on your own, family, parenting, and even your own wellbeing!
