Some children are constantly told they are “too sensitive.”

But sensitivity is not weakness.

Sensitive children often feel things deeply, notice more around them, care intensely about others, and experience the world in a bigger way. They may also become overwhelmed more easily by noise, transitions, criticism, or change.

What they need most is support understanding their emotions, not shame for having them.

At Canoe Therapy, we help children build confidence, emotional regulation skills, and self understanding in ways that honour who they are.

Parenting a child with big emotions can feel isolating, especially when every outing, transition, or bedtime feels unpredictable. What many parents don’t realize is that emotional regulation is a skill, not something children simply “grow out of.” Some kids need extra support learning how to identify feelings, manage frustration, and recover after becoming overwhelmed.

At Canoe Therapy, we help children and families build those skills in a supportive, compassionate, and practical way through counselling, occupational therapy, ABA therapy, parent coaching, and more.

Small changes at home can make a big difference:

• Create predictable routines
• Validate feelings before problem solving
• Keep instructions short during moments of stress
• Focus on connection before correction

You do not have to navigate it alone.

Screens aren’t “bad,” but too much fast paced stimulation can impact a child’s brain in ways many families don’t realize. Constant dopamine hits from scrolling, gaming, short videos, and instant rewards can make everyday life feel “boring” by comparison — including school, reading, conversations, and even play.

Kids and teens benefit from understanding this concept too. When they learn how screens affect motivation, focus, mood, sleep, and emotional regulation, they can begin building healthier habits and more awareness around their own brains.

The goal is not shame. It’s balance, awareness, and helping children reconnect with creativity, movement, boredom, connection, and real life experiences.

“I can’t do this.” vs. “I can’t do this yet.” The words children use about themselves matter.

A growth mindset helps kids learn that mistakes are part of learning, challenges build confidence, and skills develop over time with support and practice. Sometimes one small shift in thinking can change everything.

Activities like this can help calm the nervous system while also supporting fine motor development, coordination, focus, and body awareness through play and movement.

When children are engaged, connected, and having fun, their brains and bodies are often more open to learning, regulating, and building new skills.

Simple, interactive moments can go a long way.

Fine motor activities do not have to be complicated to be incredibly beneficial.
These colourful beaded bands help children strengthen hand muscles, improve coordination, build focus, and practise important skills needed for writing, dressing, cutting, and everyday independence — all while having fun.
Simple activities like this can also support patience, problem solving, and confidence as children learn through play.

At Canoe Therapy, we love finding creative ways to help kids build skills in engaging, meaningful ways.

There is a quieter side of parenting a neurodivergent child that many families do not talk about enough. Sometimes it means grieving the expectations you once had while learning to fully see, understand, and embrace the child in front of you. Not grieving your child. Grieving the picture you had in your mind of how life would look.

The milestones.
The ease.
The imagined path.

And alongside that grief can come guilt, confusion, fear, exhaustion, and deep love all at once.

But over time, many parents discover something important: when they let go of comparison and expectation, they begin to see their child more clearly. Their strengths. Their individuality. Their way of experiencing the world. Support can help families move through that process with more compassion for both their child and themselves.

Somewhere along the way, parenting started to feel like an impossible balancing act.
Be calm, but firm. Be present, but productive. Limit screens, but answer work emails. Support your child emotionally while somehow managing your own stress too.
It is a lot.

Many parents are carrying more mental and emotional weight than people realize, often while quietly wondering if they are doing enough. You do not have to do it perfectly to be a good parent. Sometimes support, perspective, and simply having a place to talk things through can make a meaningful difference.

Family therapy is not about figuring out who the “problem” is. It is about understanding the patterns a family can get stuck in and learning new ways to communicate, support one another, and move through challenges together.

Often, families come in because:

• communication has broken down
• emotions feel heightened at home
• a child or teen is struggling with anxiety, anger, school refusal, or emotional regulation
• parenting approaches feel disconnected or exhausting
• everyone loves each other deeply, but the stress cycle keeps repeating

In family therapy, we slow things down and help families better understand what is happening underneath the conflict. We work on emotional safety, communication, boundaries, connection, and practical tools that can make home feel calmer and more manageable again.

Sometimes small shifts in understanding each other can create meaningful change for the entire family system.
