Back to school scaries :

Lots of back to school scaries are about unknowns, who is my teacher, will my friends be in my class, can I handle the class work? Letting your child know it’s normal, many kids their age feel the same can help bring a sense of common humanity to their fears and “scaries”. Reminding them of times they handled the unexpected like the prior year, and letting them know it is ok not to be sure yet about the new grade can help them feel connected. If possible, helping them build confidence around handling unknowns will be helpful too, statements like “I don’t know yet but once I will I will be ok,” reminding them these fears and scaries will past , “just like all the years before,” and of course , extending an invitation: “I am always here to listen to you, keep coming to me and letting me know when these feelings come up. “ for more tips, meet with a member of our kids reconnect team ! Happy back to school

Looking for a fun summer activity with your child?

Instead of making messy expensive slime, try making cookie dough together! You get two activities in one:

✨ A hands-on sensory experience
✨ Delicious cookies to enjoy!

Your child can help measure, mix, roll, and shape the dough. Another activity , you can trace your child body an decorate together 😎

Young children & toddlers need help soothing their big feelings. Rather than sending them away, for a time out , be with them and model how to calm down together.

As young children can struggle to take deep breathes,a good way to practice is blowing bubbles! A win /win, not only do you coregulate , but your playful and calming presence  lets them know, “ we are in this together ”

Doing things with kids doesn’t have to be expensive.

Our provider top things to do with the kids around Calgary includes:

- Relaxing at the Lake (There are several lakes around the Calgary community to visit! Check out the Glenmore Reservoir, Sikome Lake, Ghost Lake, Chestermere Lake, Arbour Lake or Lake Chaparral- whatever is most accessible to you!)
- Have a picnic outside (imagination or real)
- Playing Yard Games (sports)
- Eating Ice Cream (there are lots of delicious ice cream places in Calgary! Village Ice Cream and Made by Marcus are some great downtown options)
- Reading books outdoors
- Taking a walk by the River (Bow River is only 15 mins away from our office!)

Looking for ways to respond if emotions run high while camping with children this summer? Here are some of our ideas:

,
“I understand you are frustrated. Let’s take a break and come back to this”

“I understand you are frustrated, let’s do this together”

“I get how difficult this is and you are trying so hard on it. Is there anything I can do to help?”

How do we respond when children ask, “Are we there yet?”

Focus on your child’s feeling:
“You are telling me you are tired and ready to be there already.”

“You are excited and can’t hardly wait.” Extension: “I wonder what you plan to do first?” (This Focuses on feelings and then moves the child forward in planning, a great way to keep the excitement, build executive skills and keep them preoccupied!)

Offer comfort:
“This is hard. I understand how patient you have been. What can I do to help make you more comfortable?”

Focus on child need:
“You need a break. Let’s safely pull over and move our body”

“You need more attention from me right now. Ok let’s talk about your

Switch the game game, “I see” from outside to inside!

Instead of tracking all the yellow cars, barns, and stop signs along the way, ask your child to share their favourite things,
Colour
Trip
Book
Teacher
Animal
(A great way to improve connection and get to know more about them , the changes, new stuff, and same stuff )!
