Join us for a community discussion of Breaking the Binary - a zine exploring everyday experiences of transphobia and homophobia through personal reflections, stories, quotes, poetry, art, and collage.
Created through the voices and creative expressions of gender-diverse community members, this zine invites us to listen with care, reflect honestly, and consider how we can better support one another, interrupt harm, and practice allyship in everyday life.
Together, we’ll discuss the zine in a welcoming, reflective space. Copies of the zine will be available at the discussion, and registered participants will receive a link to a digital version in advance.

Tomorrow, June 6, 2025, marks five years since the Islamophobic terrorist attack that killed four members of our London community: Salman Afzaal (46), Madiha Salman (44), Talat Afzaal (74), and Yumna Afzaal (15).

The grief and harm caused by this attack continue to be felt by those who knew and loved the Afzaal family, by Muslim children and families who carry a heightened awareness of the risks tied to their faith and identity, and by the wider London community. The Afzaal family belonged here. They were part of us.

Islamophobia kills. It undermines the safety, dignity, and sense of belonging of Muslims in Canada and around the world. To honour the Afzaal family, we must name and challenge the systems, beliefs, and behaviours that allow hate to grow. This includes confronting racism within our institutions, our communities, and ourselves.

We must continue working toward a society where every person, regardless of faith or background, can live safely, freely, and with dignity.

Did you know the Health Centre offers a Cervical Screening Clinic for those who meet certain eligibility criteria? Cervical screening helps detect HPV and prevent cervical cancer through early intervention. This service is available to those aged 25 or older, new to Canada, without access to a family doctor for screening, or who haven’t had a Pap test in over three years.

May 5 is Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness and Remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people.

Red Dress Day was sparked by the REDress Project by Métis artist Jaime Black, where empty red dresses were displayed to represent the absence of Indigenous women and girls who have been taken. Today the red dress is a powerful symbol of remembrance, grief, resistance, and the ongoing call for justice.

The crisis of MMIWG2S+ is rooted in colonialism, racism, and gender-based violence. Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people are more than statistics. They are sisters, mothers, daughters, aunties, grandmothers, Elders, friends, and community members. They are loved. They are missed. They must not be forgotten.

Today, we encourage our community to wear red, listen to and amplify Indigenous voices with care and consent, attend local vigils and events, support Indigenous-led organizations, and advocate for the full implementation of the 231 Calls for Justice.

Locally, Atlohsa will be holding a community fire at Peace Park, 331 Thames Street, on May 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

London InterCommunity Health Centre has joined local refugee health and social-service partners in expressing concern about proposed changes to the Interim Federal Health Program, set to introduce co-payments for services such as medications, dental care, psychotherapy, physiotherapy, prosthetics, and other essential supports.

For refugees and refugee claimants, even modest fees can create serious barriers to care, forcing difficult choices between healthcare, food, housing, childcare, and transportation. These changes risk delaying treatment, worsening health outcomes, increased financial constraint for those with limited resources, and increasing pressure on already strained emergency and hospital systems.

Together with partner agencies and providers across London, we are calling on the federal government to reverse the introduction of IFHP co-payments and protect equitable access to essential health services for refugees and refugee claimants.

As we move into warmer months, you will notice a change in our operating hours for July and August.

From July 3rd to September 6th, all Health Centre sites will close at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays. Please check the updated schedule before planning your visit.

On Wednesday, July 1st, all sites will be closed for Canada Day.

If you need immediate medical attention, please visit St. Joseph’s Urgent Care (268 Grosvenor St), University Hospital Emergency Department (339 Windermere Rd), or Victoria Hospital Emergency Department (800 Commissioners Rd E). If you’re experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.

Amplifying our commitment to inclusion, equity, social justice, and respect is a step towards building a more equitable and inclusive society for everyone. As a community health centre, we recognize the importance and necessity of providing accessible, gender-affirming care for our trans and non binary clients. By fostering a healthcare environment that listens to these needs, we contribute to a society where everyone can live authentically, embracing their beautiful and unique identities.
