As with many months throughout the year, June brings a variety of opportunities for recognition, reflection, awareness, and celebration. We have highlighted a number of important dates, events, and observances that acknowledge diverse cultures, communities, experiences, and causes.

At O.W.L. Counselling & Wellness, we believe that awareness fosters understanding, and understanding helps create more inclusive, compassionate, and supportive communities where we can thrive.

Whether focused on mental health, reducing stigma, celebrating diversity, or recognizing the experiences of marginalized groups, these observances offer meaningful opportunities to learn, reflect, and connect.

Did You Know?

Pride Season in Canada runs from June to September and has its roots in the first large-scale 2SLGBTQI+ rights demonstrations held in Ottawa and Vancouver in 1971.

By 1973, Pride events were taking place in cities across the country, laying the foundation for the vibrant celebrations and advocacy we see today.

When emotions feel too intense, grounding can help us manage it and bring us back to calm.

Name:
5 things you can see,
4 things you can feel, and
3 things you can hear.

Focusing on a few of our five senses orients our nervous system to safety in the here and now.

From all of us at O.W.L. Counselling & Wellness - Happy Pride Month!

At O.W.L. Counselling, we recognize and celebrate the diversity, resilience, and strength of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Pride is a time to honour authenticity, self-expression, and the ongoing pursuit of safety, belonging, and equity. It is also a reminder that everyone deserves spaces where they can show up as themselves without fear of judgment.

We are committed to providing an affirming, inclusive environment where all identities, experiences, and journeys are respected and welcomed.

This month, and every month, we stand alongside the 2SLGBTQIA+ community with compassion, respect, and support.

Although many of us can make it work for a while, we are not meant to carry everything on our own.

Many people spend years trying to manage stress, grief, relationship strain, burnout, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm entirely by themselves. Over time, that level of emotional holding can become exhausting.

Support does not mean you are failing or incapable. Often, it is part of what helps people reconnect with themselves, feel more grounded or balanced, gain perspective, and move through difficult seasons with greater clarity and care.

Reaching out for support whether through therapy or trusted relationships is a courageous and regulating act. There is strength in allowing yourself to be supported.

Healing does not happen by forcing yourself past your limits.

It happens when you are ready, when your nervous system begins to feel safe enough to soften, allowing the process to begin.

We have seen and heard from people who started therapy and never returned, felt scared to reach out, or shared how long it took before they finally felt comfortable opening up. Every person and every experience is different. Sometimes, healing begins simply by knowing the door is open when you are ready to try again.

Once you begin, moving slowly is not failure. It is not avoidance. It is attunement.

There is wisdom in respecting your capacity instead of fighting against it. Sustainable change is built through consistency, safety, and self-compassion — not pressure of expectation.

You are allowed to take your time.

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

Many people may know the name Cystic Fibrosis, but fewer understand the daily reality behind it. CF is a progressive genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, often requiring hours of treatments, medications, appointments, and constant physical and emotional resilience.

Awareness matters because people living with CF are more than their diagnosis. They are children, teens, adults, parents, partners, friends, coworkers, and community members navigating challenges that are often invisible to others.

This month is about:
• Increasing understanding and compassion
• Recognizing the strength of those living with CF
• Supporting caregivers and families
• Advocating for accessible care and research
• Honouring the realities behind the awareness ribbon

Living with chronic illness can also impact mental health in profound ways — including anxiety, burnout, grief, isolation, and medical trauma. Compassionate support and connection matter.

This May, take a moment to learn, listen, share, or support. Awareness creates understanding, and understanding helps build more inclusive and supportive communities. 💜
