O.W.L. - Own.Willful.Living. - Living with intention - taking action through choices that reflect our values and who we are. My name is Aaron Sinclair, owner and registered psychotherapist. I have been working in the mental health and addiction field since 2007. I specialize in helping people who struggle with substance use, anxiety, depression, 2S-LGBTQ+ issues, grief, relationships, and trauma.

I work to provide a safe space for all clients regardless of their struggles; a support that is inclusive, anti-oppressive, and 2S-LGBTQ+ affirming.

"Let go of what you can’t control, and embrace what you can. It’s really quite freeing."

At first glance, this quote can sound overly simple. Although it is a great quote with a great message, it isn't always that simple.

The truth is, radical acceptance isn't about giving up, approving of painful circumstances, or pretending everything is okay. It's about acknowledging reality as it is, instead of exhausting ourselves fighting against what cannot be changed.

We often spend so much energy wishing the past had been different, trying to control other people's choices, or resisting circumstances beyond our influence. While understandable, that struggle often creates even more suffering.

Radical Acceptance is a DBT skill we use in therapy that asks a different question:

"What is within my control today (in this moment, situation, relationship etc.)?"

Maybe it's:
• How you speak to yourself.
• Whether you ask for help.
• The boundaries you set.
• The next small step you take and where you invest your energy.
• How you choose to respond instead of react.

Acceptance doesn't mean you stop hoping for change. It means you stop allowing the unchangeable to steal your peace.

There is incredible freedom in releasing the battle with reality and investing your energy where it can actually make a difference.

Sometimes the most empowering thing we can do isn't to control more—it's to let go of the struggle with what we never could control in the first place.

Happy International Friendship Day!

Friendship doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

Some people thrive surrounded by others and feel energized by connection. Others cherish one or two deep, meaningful friendships and need plenty of time alone to recharge. Some of us are introverts, extroverts, ambiverts, otroverts, or omniverts. Some are neurodivergent and may experience relationships, communication, and social connection differently. There is no "right" way to build relationships.

Healthy friendship isn't effectively measured by how many people know your name, how often you socialize, or whether your social calendar is full. It's measured by the quality of the connection and how you feel within it.

Healthy friendships are relationships where:

You feel accepted for who you are—not who you're expected to be.
Your boundaries are respected.
You can communicate openly and honestly.
Support flows both ways, without keeping score.
You're allowed to take space, rest, and simply be human.
Differences in personality, social needs, and communication styles are understood and valued.

For some, friendship means weekly coffee dates and spontaneous adventures. For others, it's sending a meme after three weeks of silence and picking up exactly where you left off.

Friendship can also evolve throughout our lives. It's okay if your circle becomes smaller, if you're learning to seek healthier relationships, or if you're discovering that you deserve reciprocal and emotionally safe connections.

On International Friendship Day, we invite you to celebrate the relationships that help you feel seen, respected, and supported—including the relationship you have with yourself.

Because healthy relationships aren't about fitting into someone else's expectations or idea of connection. They're about finding the people who allow you to show up authentically—and offering that same kindness in return.

International Self-Care Day | July 24

Did you know that International Self-Care Day is celebrated on July 24 (7/24)? The date is symbolic, reminding us that caring for ourselves is something we can practice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—not just when life feels overwhelming.

Self-care isn't about perfection, expensive spa days, or always feeling motivated. It's about making intentional choices that support your physical, emotional, and mental well-being in ways that are realistic and sustainable.

Self-care can range from taking a 10-minute break in your day for a cup of tea to making the courageous decision to address trauma, grief, anxiety, or relationship patterns in therapy. While bubble baths and quiet moments can be restorative, lasting self-care often involves doing the difficult work that creates meaningful, long-term change.

Here are a few simple ways to practice self-care today:

Care for your body
• Prioritize a consistent rest routine.
• Nourish yourself with balanced meals.
• Move your body in a way that feels good.

Care for your mind
• Take a few minutes to journal.
• Practice deep breathing or mindfulness.
• Check in with yourself without judgment.

Care for your everyday life
• Spend time outdoors, even if it's just a short walk.
• Set healthy boundaries when you need to.
• Take a break from screens and reconnect with the present moment.

Remember, self-care isn't selfish—it's an important part of maintaining your health and showing up for the people and things that matter most.

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." – Confucius

Life isn't measured by how perfectly we move through it. We all experience setbacks, difficult seasons, mistakes, and moments when we feel like we've lost our footing. Being human means we will stumble from time to time.

My dear friends mantra: "Unapologetically me. Perfectly imperfect."

Resilience isn't about avoiding hardship—it's about finding the courage to keep going, to learn, to heal, and to offer yourself and others what you're able to give in each moment. It also means honouring your limits, embracing rest, and beginning again when the time is right. Every time you choose to get back up, no matter how slowly or imperfectly, you're demonstrating strength.

If today feels difficult, remember that falling isn't failure. Rising—even in the smallest ways—is something worth celebrating.

July 01 - Canada Day

Today is an opportunity to pause and reflect on what Canada means to each of us.

For many, it is a day of celebration—of home, family, community, freedom, diversity, and the opportunities we share. It is also a day to recognize the countless individuals who have helped shape our country: Indigenous Peoples who have cared for these lands since time immemorial; veterans and those who have served our country; newcomers from so many countries who continue to enrich our communities; and the people, past and present, whose contributions, resilience, and sacrifices have helped build the Canada we know today.

Canada Day also invites us to acknowledge our shared history—both the moments that inspire pride and those that call us to listen, learn, and continue the work of truth, reconciliation, and belonging.

At O.W.L. Counselling, we believe that understanding grows through curiosity, compassion, and respect for one another's experiences. No matter how you choose to spend today—celebrating, reflecting, connecting with loved ones, or simply enjoying a well-deserved pause—we hope you find moments of peace, gratitude, and connection.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Canada Day.
