Creating a safe workplace is one of our most important responsibilities.

As workplace violence continues to increase across healthcare, accepting it as part of the job is not an option. Humber River Health's new Workplace Violence Escalation Framework, available on the badges of our staff, physicians, and volunteers, provides teams with the tools, supports, and processes needed to recognize concerning behaviours, coordinate responses, and take action before situations escalate.

By strengthening how we prevent, recognize, and respond to threats, aggression, harassment, and violence, we're reinforcing our commitment to protecting the well-being, dignity, and safety of everyone who enters our hospital. Healthcare workers deserve to feel safe at work, and patients deserve care in a secure, respectful environment.

August 1 is Emancipation Day, a day that commemorates the enactment of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which came into effect in 1834 and legally ended slavery across the British Empire, including in Canada. This marked the formal liberation of more than 800,000 enslaved Africans and their descendants throughout the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Canada.

At Humber River Health, we reaffirm our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We strive to support our patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and stakeholders in strengthening equity within our healthcare system and supporting our communities. Let us use this day to reflect on our shared history, educate ourselves and others, and renew our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all.

In honour of tomorrow, we’re proud to spotlight Angel, a marketing student gaining hands-on experience with our Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Department.

For Angel, no two days are ever the same. From supporting communications projects to contributing to marketing initiatives across the organization, her internship has offered a dynamic, behind-the-scenes look at how healthcare communications connects people, stories, and information.

One of the most meaningful parts of her experience has been taking part in the hospital’s rebrand as our Wilson Site continues its transition to Hennick Humber Hospital. “Contributing to such an important milestone makes me feel like I am supporting something much larger than myself,” Angel shares.

Throughout her internship, Angel says she has learned a great deal from the Corporate Communications team: “They have been more than just colleagues; they have been amazing mentors. By encouraging me to take on new challenges, trusting me with meaningful responsibilities, and supporting me every step of the way, they have helped strengthen both my skills and confidence. This internship has shown me the impact that effective communication and marketing can have while inspiring me to pursue opportunities where I can combine creativity, storytelling, and community engagement to make a meaningful difference.”

This , we’re spotlighting innovation in women’s health and the work happening at Hennick Humber Hospital to expand minimally invasive treatment options.

Last year, OB/GYN Dr. Bruce Lee joined us for our Fireside Chat, “Unpause the Pause on Women’s Health,” to share more about his invention, the Acessa ProVu® procedure, a minimally invasive way to treat uterine fibroids.

Fibroids are common, with approximately 70% of Canadian women developing at least one uterine fibroid by age 50. While traditional treatments have included hysterectomy or myomectomy, Acessa ProVu® offers a minimally invasive option to help reduce pain and discomfort, support a quicker recovery, and provide long-term relief.

Hennick Humber Hospital has been proud to pioneer this life-changing technology since 2022, when our Chief of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Andre LaRoche, performed the first procedure in Ontario. Today, three of our surgeons are equipped to use the technology, and our hospital continues to serve as a training hub for others.

Interested in learning more about Acessa ProVu®? Speak with your family doctor to see what options may be right for you.
