Well done Nicola, fantastic achievement. Everyone needs to learn first aid, you never know who’s life you might save.

Senior Clinical Advisor Nicola was shopping at her local supermarket when she heard someone calling for a first aider. She found a man who had collapsed and gone into cardiac arrest.

With an ambulance already on its way, Nicola immediately began CPR and asked the supermarket’s first aider to fetch the defibrillator. She delivered three shocks and the man initially showed signs of life before his heart stopped again. After a fourth shock, and with support from the ambulance crew, his heart began beating again. He survived.

Nicola had not performed CPR in a real-life situation since working on the frontline in 2016, she stressed the importance of everyone knowing how to : “It shows that you don’t have to be practising CPR all the time to get a good outcome. It’s something anyone can learn and do when someone collapses and their heart stops beating

In her current role, Nicola provides clinical advice to people who ring 999 for an ambulance. During a recent call, a patient went into cardiac arrest while she was speaking to her son. Using secure video technology, Nicola confirmed what was happening and guided him through CPR.

“I sent a link to the son’s phone so we could have a secure video call. I was able to give him CPR instructions and live feedback on his hand position and the depth and speed of the chest compressions. When the crew arrived, they were able to get her heart beating again. That effective, immediate CPR was integral to the outcome.”

🚨 Benedict’s Law: what does it mean for schools?

Benedict’s Law was created in memory of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who died following an anaphylactic reaction at school.

From September 2026, schools in England must take a much more structured approach to allergy safety.

This is not simply about keeping an EpiPen in the office - it means ensuring the whole school is prepared to prevent and respond to an allergic emergency.

Schools are expected to:

✅ Create and publish a dedicated allergy safety policy
✅ Appoint a named senior leader to oversee allergy safety
✅ Provide annual allergy and anaphylaxis awareness training for all staff
✅ Identify pupils who require an Individual Healthcare Plan
✅ Reduce the risk of allergen exposure and cross-contamination
✅ Ensure emergency medication is readily accessible
✅ Establish clear emergency-response procedures
✅ Record and learn from allergic reactions and near misses
✅ Review arrangements annually and following significant incidents

MR Safety Training is now delivering Allergy, Anaphylaxis and Asthma Awareness Training for Schools.

Our practical training includes:

🎓 Understanding common allergens and routes of exposure
🎓 Recognising mild, moderate and life-threatening reactions
🎓 Recognising anaphylaxis using the Airway, Breathing and Circulation approach
🎓 When and how to administer an adrenaline auto-injector
🎓 Practical familiarisation with different injector devices
🎓 Calling 999 and managing the casualty until help arrives
🎓 Preventing cross-contamination during meals, snacks and activities
🎓 Understanding allergy action plans and Individual Healthcare Plans
🎓 Managing school trips, clubs, events and off-site activities
🎓 Recognising an asthma attack and responding appropriately
🎓 Using reliever inhalers and understanding emergency inhaler arrangements
🎓 Understanding the relationship between asthma and serious allergic reactions
🎓 Reviewing incidents, near misses and school procedures

The new requirements should not be viewed as another box to tick.

Staff must be confident enough to recognise an emergency, locate the correct medication and act without delay.
