Picture 1 shows Marge in a lovely deep sleep. She has had a busy week but she hasn’t had long dog walks everyday. This week she has done training with Sarah An enrichment workshop with Morag and a 30 minute private scentwork session with and she has loved every minute of it. People have commented how happy and confident she has been. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t do all these things with her every week but wow I see the value in them! As a I work with many compromised dogs who can do less physically and need to have shorter walks. Their owners worry that this will mean that they won’t be tired and may be bored. The people I choose to work with (and there are more I also recommend) are professionals. As long as they know what is going on for your dog they can adapt things to meet your dog’s physical and emotional needs. That is why I really recommend giving things like this a go with your dog whatever their needs are. The feedback from some of my clients who have booked into one of these classes or workshops has been 100% positive. A friend said to me last night ‘there’s nothing better than seeing your dog in a deep sleep knowing they’ve had a great day and are fulfilled’ and I couldn’t agree more 🐾

The lovely Caoimhe and Cara (mother and daughter 🥰) both came for their maintenance treatment today. They’re busy girls both competing in so we need to keep them in great muscular and myofacial health

Thanks Emma's Animals for having me. A talk to her subscription group for sensitive dogs and their guardians. We talked all things Galen and then discussed our guiding principles and Positive Pact. Positive Pact is our consent based, choice led protocol (more info in bio) which is so important for all dogs but really makes the world of difference to those sensitive dogs. We also had a brief look at posture and how to become your dog’s detective! Hopefully everyone left with some more tools in their tool kit and with things they can incorporate into their routine

Sorry long (but hopefully helpful) post! Now if you know me well, you will know I’m always going on about the impact slippery floors have on our dog’s joints, muscular and myofascial health. In Winter I post about muddy or frosty walks and how they have a similar impact. Come Summer and beach days it’s dry sand I’m talking about! What I haven’t spoken about however is the dry, dusty (almost non existent) grass that we currently have. Grass generally is a pretty good surface. It’s softer than concrete and green lush grass gives traction. However this dry grass (can you guess what’s coming …) is another slippery surface for our dogs to contend with and that we as their guardians, need to be aware of. Slippery surfaces alter biomechanics. Dogs rely on claw grip and paw pad friction and with the ground as it is, they don’t have that so they lose traction. With this, the following happens. Your dog’s load becomes unevenly distributed and the joints and muscles have to constantly adjust. This leads to muscles that over compensate and take on a role that they’re just not designed to do. This then leads on to stress on the joints. Those small sometimes barely noticeable micro slips have an often underestimated impact on our dogs. Each micro slip is absorbed by the joints and each one affects the myofascial and muscular connections. Over time, these micro slips become repetitive leading to muscular fatigue and pain. Now we can’t (sadly) change the ground but we can be aware of what we ask our dogs to do. Let’s not encourage chasing and sudden turning/twisting movements (I can’t believe how many ball chuckers I’m still seeing 🤦🏼‍♀️) Let’s not over exercise/walk our dogs and let’s not encourage them to jump on and off things. Instead let’s encourage some more slow controlled movement (post coming on that soon.) Let’s encourage some bonding, some connecting, some exploring, some enrichment, some sniffing and all those other natural functional movements and behaviours. Please share this post to raise awareness and as always, any questions just DM me 🐾

The ‘stop’ cue is so useful. Here we are walking towards the river (which she loves) but the towpath is often very busy with bikes speeding past and I don’t want her to cross to the river before I’ve checked it’s clear. So walking down towards the towpath I just say ‘stay close’ which means to be near me but she doesn’t have to be at my side. Then a ‘stop’ at the edge of the towpath and she waits for the ‘finish’ cue before crossing (as you can see there were bikes!)

Super snoozy after working really hard at training today (I worked hard too!) with . It really shows that you don’t need to ‘exercise’ your dog more to tire them at. Here she is relaxed and fulfilled having spent an hour with me in a reward based and consent focussed training class. This strengthens our bond, improves our team work and trust and challenges both of us! Now if only I could have a snooze too!
