Has chronic pain started changing the way you live your life?

Pain can affect far more than the part of the body that hurts.

You may start avoiding movement because you’re worried about making things worse. You might sleep badly, cancel plans, feel more irritable or anxious, or gradually lose confidence in your body.

And that can be exhausting.

For Pain Awareness Month, we want to highlight the role therapy can play alongside appropriate medical and physical care.

Therapy can help you understand the fear and emotions surrounding pain, learn ways to regulate stress and your nervous system, and gradually reconnect with the things that give your life meaning.

Managing chronic pain isn’t simply about getting a pain score down.
It’s also about helping you feel more confident, capable and connected to your life again, and helping the pain take up less space in your life.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with chronic pain, our experienced HealthMatters Group team can help.

Persistent pain isn’t always a straightforward reflection of ongoing tissue damage.

When pain continues over time, the nervous system can become more sensitive and protective. Stress, poor sleep, reduced movement and fear of pain can also influence this response, sometimes creating a cycle where these factors reinforce one another.

Importantly, this doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real.
It means that understanding how the nervous system responds to pain can help us think more broadly about support.

Five areas that may be important when living with chronic pain include: nervous-system regulation, appropriate movement, nutrition and lifestyle, and psychological and professional support.

Chronic pain is complex, so support shouldn’t be reduced to a single solution.

Are you exercising regularly but still feeling tired, sore or slower to recover?

Sometimes it’s worth looking at what you’re putting back into the body after asking it to perform.

Five important areas of sports nutrition include:

Carbohydrates: to provide energy and replenish stores after exercise.
Protein to support muscle repair and adaptation.

Electrolytes, including sodium: to support hydration, nerves and muscle function - particularly relevant when we’re sweating more during hot weather.

Iron: to help transport oxygen around the body and support energy.

Calcium and vitamin D: to support healthy bones and normal muscle function.

With the prolonged periods of heat we’ve experienced across the UK this summer, paying attention to hydration and recovery can be especially important.

But nutritional needs aren’t identical for everyone.
Your age, physiology, diet, training programme, health and goals all matter.

Our experienced sports nutritionists at HealthMatters Group can help you understand what your body needs, creating personalised dietary plans and supplement protocols where appropriate.

If you’d like to improve your performance and recovery without getting lost in conflicting nutrition advice, book a free 20-minute discovery call with our team.

Have you noticed exercise feeling harder this summer, or that it’s taking longer to recover?

Hot weather places extra demands on the body. Your heart works harder to help regulate temperature, you lose more fluid and electrolytes through sweat, and sleep can be more disrupted on hot nights.

That means the same workout can suddenly feel much tougher.

A few simple adjustments can help:

Train at cooler times of day.
Reduce intensity when the heat is high.
Stay on top of hydration and electrolytes.
Protect sleep and recovery.

The important thing is not to interpret every difficult session as a sign that your fitness has dropped.

Sometimes the smarter move is to adapt to the conditions.

This summer, don't just take time off. Give your nervous system permission to recover.

Many of us look relaxed on the outside, yet still feel permanently switched on.

That's because stress isn't just psychological, it affects the whole body.
Over time, chronic stress can influence everything from sleep and digestion to energy, concentration, and emotional wellbeing.

That's why supporting your nervous system matters.

If you feel like you're doing "all the right things" but still struggle to switch off, it may be worth exploring the deeper psychological patterns that keep your nervous system on high alert, whether that's chronic stress, anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing or past experiences that continue to shape how your body responds to pressure.

Therapy can provide tools to help you work at a nervous system level. At the HealthMatters Group, we combine practical nervous system regulation strategies with evidence-based psychological support, helping you build resilience from both the mind and the body.

Here, we’re sharing five simple summer habits that may help activate your vagus nerve for nervous system recovery:

- Morning sunlight to regulate your circadian rhythm
- Practising self-compassion
- Choosing gentle movement: yoga and somatic movement can be useful tools
- Spending time in nature
- Prioritising meaningful social connection

These aren't about eliminating stress completely. They're about giving your body more opportunities to recover, regulate and feel safe.

And if you're doing all the "right" things but still can't switch off, sometimes the missing piece isn't another wellbeing habit, it's understanding what's keeping your nervous system on high alert in the first place.

Do you struggle to switch off, even when life finally slows down?

Stress isn't just about what's happening in your mind. It affects your whole nervous system.

The nervous system is a master regulator of your body’s functions, interpreting your environment and setting off an alarm system in your body.

Everyday pressures like work, poor sleep, family responsibilities, illness and even the weather can leave your body stuck in "fight or flight."
In this short video, we explain:

✔ Why nervous system regulation matters
✔ The role of the vagus nerve
✔ Simple ways to support recovery through breathing, movement and connection
✔ Why deeper psychological factors can sometimes keep us stuck in survival mode
Sometimes, learning to relax starts with understanding why your body doesn't feel safe enough to.

Summer is a wonderful time to slow down and enjoy holidays, longer days and time outdoors, but it can also disrupt the everyday habits that help us feel our best.

Whether you're travelling, spending more time socialising or simply enjoying a different routine, coming back to a few simple foundations can make a real difference.

We're sharing five practical, evidence-informed ways to support your wellbeing this summer, from making the most of natural daylight and eating regular meals to staying hydrated and choosing foods that support your skin in the summer.

Small, sustainable habits are often the ones that have the biggest impact.

Take a look through the post and let us know - which of these do you already do, and which could you be more consistent with this summer? ☀️

Self-care isn’t always comfortable.

Sometimes it’s rest, a walk, an early night or time to yourself. But sometimes self-care asks more of us.

It might mean setting a boundary and tolerating the guilt that comes afterwards.
It might mean asking for help.
It might mean booking therapy.
It might mean saying, “I’m not OK,” or admitting that the way you’ve been coping isn’t working anymore.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing. It may simply mean something needs to change.

Real self-care is often about self-respect: noticing what drains you, naming what you need, and taking a step towards your wellbeing - even when that step feels unfamiliar.

For International Self-Care Day, ask yourself:

What is the kindest thing I could do for myself, even if it isn’t the easiest?

Living with a chronic disease isn’t just about symptoms, appointments or medication.

It can also bring grief, loss, frustration and sometimes shame.

You might grieve the body you had, the energy you used to rely on, or the freedom to be spontaneous without so much planning.
Adjustments can feel unfair, and it can take time to come to terms with a body and identity that feel different.

For some people, diagnosis brings determination and a fire to move forward. For others, it feels frightening or heavy. Often, both can be true.

Acceptance doesn’t mean giving up. It means recognising where you are now, so you can make realistic, positive changes that improve your quality of life.

At HealthMatters Group, our team is experienced in supporting people with chronic health presentations. We can help you overcome barriers, rebuild confidence and find a better way forward.

Sometimes, we just need a helping hand.
