Exploring Semi-Speaking as a Communication Identity 🥹

This is a HUGE achievement for me personally. As a little girl, I dreamt of being an author. Before I even considered a career in speech therapy, all I wanted to do was write. I’ve always made sense of my world through writing.

As a teenager, I was told that I shouldn’t pursue my dream to write or in journalism because it was too competitive, I would fail. I was told my writing style was confusing, I jumped between topics, made mistakes and went off on tangents (cue late in life ADHD discovery). I gave up on my dream.

At university, I struggled significantly with my mental health and my difficulties as an ADHDer became much more apparent. I couldn’t listen to a single lecture, was misunderstood constantly as not putting in enough effort, my output never reflected my potential. A placement told me to reconsider my career. I could see people write me off.

Then, I found my voice again when I was identified as autistic and to make sense of everything, I started to write again. I haven’t stopped since. I hope all those people who wrote me off see this book and eat their words. I’m so incredibly proud of myself achieving what I always knew I was meant to.

Here’s to never giving up on your dreams 🥹

I’m delighted to announce the arrival of and I’s book Exploring Semi-Speaking, an exploration of clinical practice and lived experience.

Kim and I have had this project in the works for a few years now and it’s so surreal that our work is finally out there. It’s exciting and equally scary!

The book outlines what semi-speaking is as an identity, lived experiences and real life examples, and a toolbox for supporting semi-speaking clients for us as Speech & Language Therapists/Pathologists. It’s not a rule book, it’s an invitation to collaborate.

We’ve been so honoured by such an incredible group of contributors, who have made the book what is it. Thank you all, your insights have made me feel so much less alone in my experiences!

You can pre-order our book on 9th June from Speechmark and it will be available from 29th June 🙌🏻

(Photo of me and Kim fake holding our new book because we hadn’t got our hands on it when we met up for the first time in Melbourne 😂)
