Lester was born at home in Guatemala. His family had a history of cleft conditions, so his mum Miriam knew what a cleft was and that help was available through Operation Smile. We were so happy to hear this, as fear and stigma can be overwhelming for many families already living in difficult circumstances. At 14 months old, Lester made the journey with his family to receive his first cleft surgery. Miriam was overjoyed when she saw his new smile.

Operation Smile provides safe cleft surgery and comprehensive care to children like Lester around the world, transforming their lives forever. Thank you for your support. 💙

Lia's parents travelled nine hours to an Operation Smile surgical programme in the hope of surgery for their daughter. 💙

During the first two surgical programmes they attended, Lia was too unwell for surgery. Then, at the third programme, Lia’s dad Gerardo tested positive for COVID-19 and the surgery was pushed back.

Despite the setbacks, parents Gerardo and Yaneide never gave up hope and were supported by Operation Smile Guatemala every step of the way. At the fourth programme they visited, Lia finally received free, safe cleft surgery and a bright new smile. ✨

Did you know?

Many mothers of babies born with cleft conditions face unexpected challenges when it comes to breastfeeding.

Feeding is one of the first hurdles families encounter. Without early support and guidance, babies with cleft conditions can become malnourished, putting their health at risk. At Operation Smile, we work alongside hospitals and community health workers to provide breastfeeding education, feeding techniques and nutritional supplements, helping families give their babies the best possible start and ensuring children grow strong enough for safe cleft surgery.

This , we're highlighting the importance of making breastfeeding support accessible to every family who needs it, so that every child has the opportunity to grow, thrive and receive the care they deserve. 💙

Beauty was born with a cleft lip and palate in Ghana. She had her first surgery with Operation Smile at seven months old and her palate repair at 18 months.

But growing up wasn't easy. Classmates told her she wasn't beautiful. She had no friends through primary school and at one point vowed never to return. But her mother never stopped believing in her, and eventually Beauty found teachers and one friend who reminded her she was beautiful as she was.

That changed everything. Beauty went on to attend one of the best senior high schools in the country. At 17, she returned to Operation Smile for a secondary lip revision. She's now back at school, ready to give the world her best.

Beauty hopes to become a cleft surgeon one day, so she can give back to Operation Smile and help other children like her.

Question: What happens AFTER a child's first cleft surgery?

Surgery to repair a cleft lip is just the beginning. For many children, the journey continues with palate repair, speech therapy, dental care, orthodontics and more.

Babies with cleft conditions are nine times more likely to die within their first year of life. That's why comprehensive care before and after surgery is so vital.

Our medical volunteers and specialists walk alongside patients every step of the way, no matter how long it takes.

Thank you to all our supporters and medical volunteers who make life-changing cleft care possible.
