On Sunday, some of our team took part in the Priscilla Bacon Hospice Big Community Walk 💙

Coming together alongside so many members of our local community, the team walked in support of the wonderful care and compassion that Priscilla Bacon Hospice provides to individuals and families across Norfolk. It was a truly uplifting event, filled with kindness, reflection, and a shared commitment to making a difference.

Supporting causes that bring comfort during life’s most challenging times means a great deal to us, and we are honoured to play a small part in helping such an important local charity continue its incredible work.

Well done to everyone who took part — and thank you to all who donated and showed their support. We have raised nearly £400. 💙

Gordon Barber Funeral Directors are looking for a caring and dependable individual to join our team at our Lowestoft branch as a Casual Funeral Operative.

This is a rewarding role supporting families at their most difficult time, helping us deliver the highest standard of service with dignity, professionalism, and compassion.

About the role:
• Assisting Funeral Directors on funerals and services
• Bearing and driving duties (including limousines/hearse where required)
• Preparing vehicles and supporting day-to-day branch operations
• On-call availability, including evenings and weekends

What we’re looking for:
• A respectful, empathetic and professional approach
• Smart appearance and excellent timekeeping
• Full UK driving licence (essential)
• Flexibility to work on a casual/adhoc basis

Experience in a similar role is welcomed but not essential—full training will be provided.
This is an opportunity to be part of a supportive team making a real difference within the local community.

At our Aylsham Road branch in Norwich, Diane recently had the privilege of caring for Elijah and helping his mum and dad with the arrangements for his funeral.
As a thoughtful and lasting tribute, the family chose to place specially designed cards on the seats instead of traditional order of service booklets. Guests were invited to take a card home, carrying Elijah’s memory with them.
The family have also placed these cards in parks, bus shelters and other public spaces, hoping they may reach someone who is struggling. Each card contains contact details for organisations that offer support to people who are feeling overwhelmed, experiencing anxiety, emotional distress or need someone to talk to, particularly young people.
Their hope is that Elijah’s legacy will encourage others to seek help when they need it and remind them that they are not alone.

Our Oulton Road, Lowestoft branch of Gordon Barbers was privileged to help the family of a well known local Bus Driver who sadly passed away suddenly, to give him a special, personalised send off and take him on his final journey aboard a First Eastern Counties Bus. It was really important to us to try to make this happen and honour his family's special request. We were delighted to make it physically possible.

Michael Rutty had worked for First Eastern Counties buses for 20 years, initially based at Lowestoft Depot first starting on the town services, before going on to do Excel X1 work for 5 years which went through to Peterborough and Kings Lynn. He then went back onto Norwich and Lowestoft town runs.

It was an absolute honour on April 29th for us to be able to take Michael on his final journey. Family and friends assembled at the funeral home as Michael was taken aboard the bus, with some family and friends travelling on the bus with him. We travelled a special route around the town, passing through Lowestoft Bus Station where several of his colleagues stood outside the depot to pay their respects. The bus was followed by the hearse, laden with beautiful floral tributes.

We will always try to accommodate these unique requests and encourage families to think outside the box when it comes to making a funeral personal and memorable.
