πŸ’‰ Flu Vaccination Update 2026/27

Please note that due to an increasing number of patients choosing to use community pharmacies and local vaccination centres we have seen a fall in demand at the surgery so that for the 2026/27 season Dewerstone Medical Group (Budshead Medical Practice & Oakside Surgery) will not be providing any routine NHS flu vaccinations this year, except for eligible children aged 2 and 3 years old.

Eligible adults should arrange their flu vaccination through a participating community pharmacy or another NHS provider. [gov.uk], [england.nhs.uk]

Parents and carers of eligible 2 and 3 year olds will be contacted with details of how to book.

Thank you for your understanding.

🌼 Supporting People Living with a Life-Limiting Illness 🌼

If you are living with a life-limiting illness, or becoming increasingly frail, Marie Curie is here to support you.

We work in partnership with Elm, Budshead, Oakside, Southway and Friary Surgeries to provide extra support for people who may be facing changes in their health, are finding things more difficult, or simply need someone to talk things through with.

Our role is to get to know you, understand what matters most to you, and help make sure you have the right support in place. This might include managing symptoms, planning ahead, understanding your healthcare options, or supporting those closest to you.

If you think you could benefit from support, please speak to a member of staff at your GP surgery.

πŸ‘‹ Meet The Team

Hi, I'm Lee
I have worked with Marie Curie for over 10 years and am passionate about improving access to care, reducing barriers, and supporting new ways of delivering healthcare.
I am a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner with Marie Curie, working in partnership with Elm, Budshead, Oakside, Southway and Friary Surgeries. Alongside my colleague Kirsty, I support people living with life-limiting illnesses across the local community.
My role is to help people remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible by coordinating personalised care, supporting advance care planning where appropriate, and working with colleagues across health and social care to ensure people receive the right support at the right time.

Hello, I'm Kirsty, a Senior Healthcare Assistant with Marie Curie, working in partnership with Elm, Budshead, Oakside, Southway and Friary Surgeries in Plymouth.
I work with Lee supporting people living with life-limiting illnesses, and no two days are ever the same. One day I may be visiting a housebound patient, while the next I could be supporting someone and their family during the final hours of life.
A key part of my role is helping people remain independent at home for as long as possible. I take the time to get to know people, understand what matters most to them, and connect them with the right support, services and information.
For me, every patient is a person first. By understanding the whole person, not just their health conditions, we can work together to find practical ways to support independence, wellbeing and quality of life.
If you see me out and about in the community, please come and say hello.

Important Update: Blood Tests For Clinical Specialists πŸ’‰

With immediate effect Oakside Surgery is stopping the facility of taking bloods on behalf of hospital colleagues.

If a consultant or specialist in hospital or other community service, such as mental health services, asks a patient to have a blood test this will need to be performed either directly by the requesting clinician, within the outpatient phlebotomy service in Derriford Hospital, or by using the Community Phlebotomy Hub at Windsor House, near B&Q on Tavistock Road, Derriford, Plymouth.

This will include blood tests requested before or after surgical procedures, chemotherapy or medication changes if the tests are requested by a clinician outside of the Surgery.

This decision has not been taken lightly and is based on concerns of ongoing patient safety and continuity of care. For many years Oakside Surgery has been asking Derriford Hospital to update their IT systems to allow results of blood tests to be sent to the requesting clinician regardless of where the blood test is physically taken.

Currently results of all blood tests taken in this surgery are returned to the GPs even if they did not ask for the test. This is both confusing and unsafe as the reason for the test being requested is not always clear, nor is it clear that the results are being actioned by the specialist clinician who requested them.

In many situations test results are abnormal, leading to significant clinician concern and administrative effort to check the hospital teams are aware and are actioning the results of tests they originally requested.

Until such time that the Derriford Hospital IT systems can be updated Oakside Surgery will signpost any patient who has been advised for a blood test by a specialist clinician back to the specialist service.

Whilst we appreciate that this will be inconvenient, please be assured that we are taking this step to ensure both patient safety and continuity of your care.
